Hello, how do you see so many objects in the market or is your screen too big. Certainly looks like they tried on a zero budget. So it was taken from the Boondocks series. that was funnier. Spiral Farm Watch stream of consciousness. Part One Part Two John, this is all going to be hard to believe. Maybe impossible. I know Ive tried to tell you the truth in the past and it never works, but now that youre in it…well, I have to try again before its too late. For both of us. So all I ask is that you listen to the crazy-sounding woman waking you up in the middle of the night. Try to really hear what Im saying and try to remember it. Try to remember me. Yes, I know you. And you know me…at least when youre not made to forget. It still gets me how well they can control us. How they can control everything. I dont know how they do it or what they really are but…wait, that may not be true. I think theyre tampering with my memory even now, and there are certain things that I feel like I do know, but theyre slippery things, laying just outside what I can see or reach to pull into the light. Either way, I can only tell you what I know right now. We know each other because were married. Weve been married for six years and weve known each other for over eight. Ruby knew me through that Godawful non-profit we both worked at, set the two of us up, and…well…we just clicked from the start. Stop! Please, just stay in here and listen to me. I know how it sounds to you. I know how they fuck with your head. But soon there will be men dressed like cops at our door and theyll take me away, even though you havent called 911 yet. So just give me this little time with you. Please. Thank you. I…I dont mean to get emotional. But I remember most everything most of the time. I remember you and our life together. This house, our plans, all of it. I miss you so fucking much, and every night, when theyre through with me, I wake up back here, watching you sleep, wanting to stay here forever. Just so they can take me away again. This has all been going on for a long time. Its hard for me to gauge time exactly, but best I can tell, I first went to the True Horror Movie Experience almost four years ago. I know, I know. But Im telling you the truth. They invited me and I went. Initially you were going to go with me, but then you came down with a stomach virus at the last minute. I almost stayed home too, but wed booked it months in advance and were so excited about it. You told me you wanted to make sure at least one of us got to go. I barely remember the first few days of it now. They tweak your perceptions and what you know based on what suits them at the moment. Memories, skills, relationships, they all get shifted around. You get all scrambled, but it doesnt really matter, because youre always going in the direction they want you to go. Over time I started to remember more, whether that was due to building up a resistance or them wanting me to know what was going on. In the end, I dont know that it matters. Most days are the same. I mainly sleep during the day, and when I wake up, Im stuck in some kind of horrific situation where Im being chased or terrorized or killed. Then I wake up again here, get drug back to the Farm…at least most of the time…and then I get to start a new nightmare the next day. I…I dont even know that Im me any more. I dont understand how I could be alive or sane, so maybe Im not. But I do know that youre you. I still feel the same love and excitement and sadness when I see your face, and even if its too late for me, I have to keep trying to save you. Dont…shit, thats them. See, I told you theyd come whether you called or not. Dont take the pills they give you. Theyre poison. Venom. Fuck, I dont know. Dont take them. Try not to go at all. Try to stay awake and remember all this. Remember whats happened already. Remember that you know me and that you love me, if you can. But most of all, please, remember not to take the pills and to never go near those people again. Run if you have to. Start over. But dont let them trap you the way they have me. I couldnt stand it if I knew you were stuck in Hell beside me. “Congratulations on being selected to participate in the True Horror Movie Experience. This is your orientation for Night 2. ” “The yellow pill youve been given is wholly safe and all-natural. Taking the pill is a mandatory requirement of participation, but rest-assured, its only purpose is to temporarily enhance your imagination and suggestibility. ” I glanced over at George, who was already popping his pill with a grimace. Giving me a strange look, he leaned closer as Swan continued to talk. “Make sure you dont leave me behind, okay? I dont remember last night so well, but I think maybe I got left alone part of the time. ” Frowning, I gave him a nod. I didnt remember the night before well either, which was strange, but somehow not alarming. I vaguely remembered being really tired the night before, and when I got home I went straight to bed. Even now I felt tired, and thats after managing to sleep through two alarms until almost noon. Still, I couldnt imagine that wed have left him behind, at least not on purpose. Turning to look at Ruby, I saw she was holding her yellow pill up to the light like a jeweler inspecting a small gem. She looked worn down too, and shed been nervous and fidgety on the ride over. Had the night before been that exhausting, or was something else going on? I felt a brief tug in my chest at the thought—a moment of panic without a clear source or reason. Then I realized Swan was asking me if I was ready. I looked back to find that Ruby had taken her pill as well and they were all waiting on me. Licking my lips, I swallowed my own and chased it with a cup of water. As I pulled on the black hood, I felt a buzz of nervous excitement and anticipation, but it was tainted with a constant low thrum of unease. Something just wasnt… “…right here. ” Ruby gestured around at the empty promenade. “This is supposed to be a popular amusement park, right? But its like ten-thirty in the morning and weve seen like…what, maybe a dozen people? ” George nodded absently as he shrugged. “Its not peak season probably, and it only opened at ten. Maybe weve just missed the rush. And no people means no lines, right? ” He pointed to a nearby sign pointing the way to a rollercoaster. “Lets go try out ‘The Hunters Blind. ” We angled in that direction, but I was still thinking about what Ruby had said. Wizards Folly was a pretty popular amusement park, even if it was out in the middle of nowhere. It had won awards going back years, and when I bought our tickets I remember the pictures showing every ride and attraction filled with people. Even if this wasnt the peak season, the emptiness of the park seemed strange. But it wasnt just that… “Its the way people are acting. ” I spoke out loud before I realized it, glancing around with embarrassment before meeting Rubys eyes. “The people at the ticket booth, the few people weve seen walking around, they all seem…off somehow. Like they want to be mean or hostile or something and are just holding it back so they dont get fired. ” She nodded and pointed a finger towards me as we walked. “Exactly. Except its not just the people that work here. I went over to the water fountain when we came in and there was this little girl and her dad over there. Not getting water, or really doing anything. Just standing there like they were waiting for something or didnt know what to do. Standing and staring. ” Ruby grimaced slightly at the memory. “Until they saw me. Both of their faces changed. It was like youre saying. It was almost like they had to hold themselves back from jumping me. Even the little girl. ” George let out a sigh. “Goddamn, will you guys relax? If you didnt want to come, you should have said so. But whatever this derpy creepy shit is…its killing my fun, man. Can we just check the place out? Ride a couple of rides? If we decide it sucks, well leave. Sound fair? ” I nodded and Ruby grumbled affirmatively. And as we made our way down the path to the rollercoaster, I kept looking for more people or signs of normalcy. I saw a pair of teenage kids staring sullenly at us from a nearby bench, and then an old woman looking out at a set of empty pens that at one time in the past or future had probably been intended as a petting zoo. Now it was just barren and strange, just like everything else around here. “See? No lines. ” George was gesturing toward the empty zigzag of railing leading up to the small building where park attendees were loaded into The Hunters Blind. Except today we were the only attendees at the ride, and as we headed up to the rollercoaster platform, I felt my stomach begin to clench apprehensively. The ride had to be closed or something. Or maybe it wasnt safe and they were working on it. Something had to explain why… “Step up and pick a seat. Two to a row please. ” I jumped slightly as I saw a wan-looking girl step out of the shadows near the edge of the platform. She gestured feebly toward the waiting rollercoaster cars while favoring us with a watery look that carried the same underlying malice Id been feeling since we got there. My eyes began to water as well at the strange, minty smell that was wafting towards us from the girl. What was that, menthol rub? The three of us slowed to a stop and I raised my hand. “Hey, um, is this ride okay? I mean is it open and safe and all? ” The girl focused on me slightly more, a muscle jumping in her neck so hard I could see it at a distance. “Safe? Why yes, its safe…. houses. ” George frowned, first at the girl and then at me. I knew him well enough to see that his stubborn insistence that nothing was wrong was warring with the obvious wrongness all around him. In the end, his pride won out. Poking me in the ribs with a thick index finger, he scowled. “Come on, fucker. ” George then glanced past me to Ruby and his gaze softened slightly. “Lets try to have a good time, yeah? ” He climbed into the first row of the car and I followed into the second. Ruby had been right behind me, but I looked away for a moment as I pulled my shoulder bars down. Thats when she started to scream. I tried to turn, but the padded bar across my chest kept me from moving too much. All I could see at the edge of my vision was that Ruby was being attacked, either by the girl or someone else, I couldnt say for sure. I started pushing against the bars, and ahead of me George was doing the same while yelling and cursing. They didnt budge. Giving up on pushing them up, I started trying to slide out from the side. I made it part way out and was craning my neck to see what was happening to Ruby when her bloody hand reached out and grabbed my arm. I tried to hold on to her wrist, but it was slick and I began to lose my grip almost immediately. Pulling with one hand, I used the other to push my way past the bar so I could get out and help her. Thats when the rollercoaster started. Everything jerked and jolted forward, and then Ruby slipped from my grasp. I looked back to see her being pulled into the shadows at the far end of the platform, her eyes and mouth circles of terror and agony as she screamed out for us. “Dont go! Dont leave meeeeee! ” “Fuck fuck fuck! ” I heard Georges screams above the rattling of the rails beneath us and Georges own flailing as he continued to work himself free of the safety bars. He finally managed to get where he could turn around and peer at me between the headrests with crazed eyes. “We have to go back and help her right now. Before those crazy fucks kill her! ” I nodded, clutching the bars beside me as we twisted up and down along the track. “I know. We will. But we have to wait until we come back around! ” He shook his head and yelled again. “What? ” “We have to wait! Well come back around…wait, were slowing down. ” I looked over the edge of the car. We were at one of the highest points on the rollercoasters path, a long straight stretch before one final high peak and a long, spiraling drop. But instead of moving at speed toward the drop-off, we were slowing to a crawl. In another few seconds, we were completely stopped. “What the fuck? Theyre keeping us here so they can fucking hurt Ruby! ” He started clambering out of the car and I had to stand up and push him back down. He looked ready to punch me and I held up my hands. “Calm down. Youll break your neck. Lets think for a second. ” Looking around, a thought occurred to me. “Our phones! We can call the cops on our phones! ” George was already shaking his head. “They make you lock your phones in lockers when you come in, remember? ” “Fuck. Youre right. Well, maybe we can…” But it was too late. George was already back over the side, step hopping down the track toward…what? A service ladder maybe? Or did he think he could just walk down the steep drop on the other side of the rise? Fucking moron. There was already a stiff wind picking up, and I watched his steps grow less steady as he pushed on against it. I felt anger flaring in my chest. Anger at someone hurting Ruby, anger at George for being so reckless, and anger at myself for being a coward. I didnt want to risk falling, and I didnt want to get attacked by whoever was hurting Ruby. I wanted to help her, of course, but I clearly wasnt willing to go as far as George was. I tried to tell myself that was okay, that he was the one with the crush on her, and that the two of us hadnt dated for years. But it sounded hollow, and I was still debating going after him when I saw the first hands poking up through the rail slats between George and the rollercoaster cars. “George! ” I screamed as I stood up in my car, the immediate sense of vertigo temporarily overridden by blind panic and fear. “Somethings coming! Theyre coming for us! ” He turned around, first looking angry, and then registering my words, terrified. Georges eyes fell on the first figures that were crawling up onto the track with us. This close, and with the wind blowing past them on its way to me, I could smell the twin stenches of mint and rot thick enough to gag me. Wiping at my eyes, I yelled for George to run even as I realized he had nowhere to go. I could see in his face he was realizing the same thing as the first of the figures stood up and started toward him. It was a little girl, maybe the same one Ruby had mentioned before. But how could it be? This girl was clearly rotting—gray, mottled skin peeking out from the sleeves of her faded sweater, and it looked as though the climb up the rollercoaster track had scraped away several bits of decaying flesh on her legs and cheeks. Yet despite all that, her voice sounded loud and strong as she paused and let out a strange, chittering cry. I shuddered as the half-dozen rotting people standing with her echoed the sound, and this was followed by many more. Some distant, some directly below us. One right behind. I started to turn as a hand dug into my shoulder, sinking in past the skin and muscle to reach the bone. Screaming, I tried to twist away, but it was too late. I was yanked backward into the row behind me, the silhouette of my attacker a dark, upside-down shadow as I looked up into the steel-gray sky. I felt raindrops begin to fall on my cheeks, and it was only as the thing above me leaned down that I realized it wasnt rain at all. It was Ruby drooling on me. Her right eye was gone and her lips had been torn to ribbons, but she still managed a ghastly version of her old smile as she pushed down on my shoulders and leaned forward with another of those chittering sounds. For a moment she just looked at me, but then her face was rushing into mine, darting forward for an impulsive kiss after all this time. Pain exploded as her teeth sank into my nose at the base. She bit harder and twisted as everything began to flare black around me. I was only distantly aware as she kept tearing at me, and I had the dim thought that at least it would be over soon. I would be dead and I wouldnt have to worry about any of this pain any more. Then I realized that Ruby was talking to me as she chewed. Thick streams of crimson saliva trailed out of the corners of her mouth as she chittered, and as the pain in my face began to fade and new pains flared to life, I began to understand what she was saying. She was saying that we were dead, but we still hurt. We rotted, but were never fully gone. We gorged, but were never really full. The only way to lessen the pain was to kill more, to add more, to share and spread out the burden until it was more bearable. She said that once the world was dead, we could all finally be at peace. And then we could all rot away together. I vomited on the immaculate blue gray carpet as I came around. Swan wrinkled her nose and rolled her chair a foot to the left before offering me a sympathetic smile. “Rough one, hun? ” I wiped my mouth as my stomach hitched again. “You…ugh…you could say that. Fuck this. ” Ruby was already standing unsteadily on her feet. Rubbing her forehead, she shot the other woman a scowl as she held out her hand. “John, you ready to get out of here? ” Nodding, I took her hand and gave it a squeeze. “Yeah, sorry I dragged you to this shit. Lets go. ” “Arent you forgetting something? ” I looked around at Swan. “Lady, if you fucking think were paying more for this after that. ” I swallowed bile in the back of my throat. “Well, were not. ” The woman chuckled and shook her head. “No, of course not. Every night has been taken care of by your original payment and agreement. ” She held out a pair of orange cards. “Comment cards. We like to get responses while everything is still fresh in your mind. No rush, of course, but if you can just bring them back with you tomorrow night. ” I stared at her incredulously. “Maam, maybe you havent been picking up what were putting down. Theres no way were coming back. Compliments to the fucking chef. You wanted to give us a terrifying fucking night? Mission accomplished. But were never coming back. ” Tucking the cards back into her palm, Swan just smiled and nodded. “As you say. Well put a pin in the evaluations then. ” Her smiled widened as she stood up to usher us out. “But who knows? Maybe youll have a change of heart after a good nights sleep. ” Ruby rolled her palms across the steering wheel as we stopped at the first stop light. “Shit. Im still shaking all over. I dont know if it was the pill or the shit they did to us, but…I…fuck, I dont know. I feel all fucked up and wrong. ” I reached over and squeezed her leg. “I know, sweetie. I should have looked into them more I guess. We probably just need some rest and to drink some water. Flush out our systems, you know? ” She glanced over at me and then seemed to look past me into the back seat. “I guess, yeah. I just…I feel like we forgot something. Something important. ” She met my eyes. “Do you know what I mean? ” I went to give a quick response, but I could see she was worried. So instead I looked out at the empty blacktop ahead of us and tried to gauge how I really felt. Exhausted and queasy, sure. More than a little freaked out? You bet. But did I think we were missing something? I looked back at her. “Im not sure, baby. Maybe. Or maybe its just the pill fucking with our heads. Lets stop at a gas station or something and get some water. Then we can go home, relax a few minutes and then…” “Fuck! ” I followed Rubys gaze to the blue lights flashing in the rearview mirror. Cursing, she began to pull over. “This is the last shit I need tonight. I stopped at the fucking light. And now with God knows what in our system…” She pointed toward the glove compartment as she shook her head and gave me a small smile. “Im sorry, Im just stressed. Will you hand me the insurance card? ” I found the card and went to hand it to her when my eyes fell back on the rearview. The doors were already opening on the patrol car and two officers were getting out. Their faces were illuminated in the raking flare of blue from the roof lights and I felt my bowels loosen when a thrill of unknown fear ran through me. As they approached, I tried to rationalize my growing terror. It was the pill, it was the night, it was worry about getting arrested for whatever was in the pill we swallowed. Or maybe, in some irrational way, it was the strangeness of the cops themselves. Because it was odd. After all, how often did you see twins, much less twin cops? Why they might be the only pair in the country. Maybe even the world. Part Four.
Spiral Farm Watch stream new. Spiral Farm Watch streaming. I had to go back. It had been playing on my mind for the better part of three decades. I had tried to forget most of my time there, on the farm. They were mostly horrible memories, but bits and pieces of those horrible memories kept finding their way back to me as I grew older, and they left behind a question I needed answered. Could such terrible things exist in this world? I pulled into the dirt driveway that lead to the house that had long since been abandoned. The two-story farmhouse sat on a small hill, dark and wistful. As I approached up the winding dirt driveway, I could see the dirty rotting wood and broken shutters hanging open from dark windows. That had been my home in the 1980s. I grew up there. I had left when I was nine. It was a small farm- only one corn field. Small enough that my father could work it alone with some leased machinery. Though the land was small, he made a good amount of money from it. The farm was different. Strange. “The lands ripe for growing, ” Dad had said to me once. He pulled a scarecrow from the equipment shed that sat next to the cornfield. There were four scarecrows, and Dad would set them up just after the field was sowed in growing season. They would always go up in a diamond pattern. First one he would hammer in at the north end of the field, second one to the west end, third one to the east end, and fourth one to the south end. I had always wondered why he didnt hammer in the west end scarecrow last; it was closest to the house. But things had their order on that farm. “You see, ” Dad said. “Its special land. Real special. Yields are off the charts for the size of the field. Stop chucking that football about and listen up, Timmy. ” I did what he said and followed behind him closely as he dragged the scarecrow to the south end of the field. The butt of the scarecrows stake dragged through the dirt, kicking up dust. I listened carefully to Dad. When he told you something, he only spoke kindly once. If he had to tell you twice. “This is going to be your farm one day, ” Dad said. He drove the scarecrows stake into the ground. “So, soon, not this harvest season but maybe the next, Im going to start teaching you of how things work ‘round here. Little by little. ” He then hammered the top of the stake that ran up the back of the scarecrow like a spine. I flinched at each of the four cracking shots. When he was done, he wiped the sweat off his brow and turned to me, his brooding figure silhouetted by the low afternoon sun. “This lands good, Timmy. Real good, ” he smiled, with a twinge of a wild look in his eye. “You just need the right fertilizer. ” With that, he started back towards the house. I stood there for a moment, staring up at the scarecrow, its featureless straw face framed by a hood fashioned out of a ragged burlap sack. Stray strands of straw poking from its head fluttered in the gentle breeze. Something in my stomach churned over. I never did like those things. I popped the trunk of my rental car, pulled out a shovel, then closed the trunk again. I looked out over the field. It was barren now; the soil untouched for decades. The equipment shed was far to my right, on the east side of the field. It was as decrepit as the house. The roof had partially caved in and the wall planks were warped in places. An iron chain fastened by two heavy-duty padlocks locked the doors. I swallowed hard. I prayed they were not in there. I started toward the farmhouse. The pylons were still out. On afternoons in the growing season, when the scarecrows were in the field and just as the sun turned orange and started its descent to the horizon, Dad would hammer in 10 four-foot wooden pylons around the house, and then take them down first thing in the morning. Each pylon had carvings on them; strange symbols that looked similar to what you would see on a totem pole. “What are those? ” I had asked once. “Ill tell you one day. Youre not ready to know, yet. ” When the pylons and scarecrows were out, Dad had a strict rule: I had to come inside when the bottom of the sun touched the horizon. One afternoon I had spent too long playing outside. The sun was a big orange semi-circle peeking over the horizon line, but I did not care that day. I was having too much fun and was feeling a tad rebellious. So, I played. I was chucking Hail Mary passes to myself down the driveway. In my head, I was the star QB of my favorite team, the New England Patriots. I always wanted to be like Dan Marino, and even though he was a Dolphin player and a division rival, he was still my favorite player. The high-flying, gunslinging star QB that could chuck the ball 80 yards through the air. Yeah, that was me in my dreams. But reality was I never had the talent for the game, unfortunately. But that afternoon- for a short while, with the rambunctious imagination of a nine-year-old- I was king. I heaved the ball in the air and took off underneath it. “Timmy Brentwood throws the pass high and long! ” I shouted. I watched the wobbly spiral descend, and at full sprint, I stuck out my hands, bobbled the ball, then caught it. “Hes got it! Hes at the ten. the five. touchdown Patriots! ” I spiked the ball into the dirt. “Timothy Brentwood throws the last-second winning touchdown pass in the Superbowl! The greatest quarterback to ever-” “Timmy, ” my father said sternly from the porch. Reality came crashing back. “Whats the rule? Inside before sundown. Get a move on. ” Anger suddenly burned at the base of my chest. He was always ordering me around. I was always doing what he wanted. Always had to listen to him. He never listened to me. I was always meek and good and followed his orders. I never got what I wanted, so he could get screwed as far as I was concerned. Just this once, I wanted to play. “No, I dont want to, ” I said, with all the misplaced confidence of a rebellious child. “I want to keep playing. ” Dad stomped down the porch steps with purpose. He spoke through gritted teeth, his veins and tendons bulging from his neck. “If I have to go out there and get you, boy. ” My heart froze. The confidence and anger melted away as quickly as it came. I was only scared, now. I started back to the house, running past the pylons that Dad had erected earlier in the afternoon. At the base of the porch steps, he grabbed me by my wrist and hauled me up them without my feet touching the wood. He put me back down on the porch and grasped my shoulders tightly. He dropped his face to mine, his piercing gaze flaring with a ferocious intensity. “You listen to me when I tell you to do something, boy! ” Then I got a hard clip over the ear. My ear went numb and rung with a high-pitched whirr. My eyes swelled with tears. I looked at him stunned. It was not the first time I had been hit, but it was the first time I had been hit over the head. “Now go to bed, right now! Without supper! ” Without saying anything I ran inside, up the steps, slammed my door and curled under the covers. I buried my face into the pillow, and only then did I sob. I walked past the pylons that had remained for all these years. Some still stood, others had toppled over. They were old now; blackened with mold and weathered, the wood split and the carvings faded. I walked up the porch steps that moaned their old age. For a moment I stood at the front door, tears stinging the back of my eyes. It was not the house I had come back for. It was what was in the field I needed to see, but it was the home I wanted to see, because through the bad memories, there was still some good. The hinges whined as I pushed the door open. The house was as I remembered, untouched from that last dreadful night I spent here all those years ago- the night we had to flee. Only now, the home was caked with dust and mold. Cobwebs had collected in the corners. The wallpaper had peeled in large sheets off the wall. All these artifacts of neglect and abandonment. The TV was still there, greyed with thick dust. Tears streamed down my face as I stood in the living room, the furniture standing around me like ruins. Every Sunday morning we would sit together there. I got to watch Looney Tunes on the TV as Dad would sit in his recliner reading the paper or a book, and Mom would make us her famous pancakes. No-one could or ever will make them like Mom could. They were thick and fluffy, served with a generous drenching of maple syrup. If we were especially lucky, she would add chocolate chips to the batter and serve with a dollop of ice-cream. That was the best. When she was done cooking, she would come through from the kitchen with two plates stacked high with pancakes. She would give one to Dad with a kiss, and one to me, with my own peck on the cheek. Then she would get her plate and join us in the living room. I would cuddle up next to her on the sofa, and we would sit together to enjoy her pancakes and watch cartoons. It was the one time during the week that everything did not feel so cold. The one time Dad did not feel so distant. The one time I was not scared of him. The one time he would actually have a conversation with Mom and me, instead of talking in short and simple bursts or barking out orders. The one time we were a real family. I wiped my tears with my sleeve and walked outside, leaving the home behind for the last time. I waded out into the field, the soil hard beneath my boots. I could feel the fields spirit. With some satisfaction, I felt it was weak. Dad had called it special. I would call it evil. The night Dad had sent me to bed with a clip over the ear and no supper, Mom had come up with some soup and a glass of soda. She handed it to me with a kiss on the forehead. “A mother cant let her child go hungry, ” she said. “It goes against all my nature. ” “Thanks, Mommy. ” “I know hes rough, Timmy, but try not to get too mad at him. He worries for you, thats all. ” “I dont care. I hate him. ” She sighed and looked away, then ruffled my hair and gave me a smile. “He does what he can to provide. And she left the room. Later in the night I had awoken suddenly. I sat bolt upright. My football! I had left it outside that afternoon. It was my only ball, and it was just sitting out there, plain as day down the driveway. If one of the older kids- the neighbors from a few miles down the road- saw it the next morning, they would surely steal it, if they had not already. And if they stole it, Dad would not buy me another. I could already hear his lecture in my head. “Let it be a lesson learned. If you dont take care of your things, they wont take care of you, ” he would always say. I creeped to my door, eased it opened, and peeked around the corner to my parents room down the hall. The door was shut, and the house dark and quiet. Perfect. I crept down the stairs and tiptoed to the kitchen, where Dad kept the front door keys in one of the drawers. I grabbed them, and then, dipping in and out of the moonlight that flooded through the windows, I tiptoed to the front door. I eased back the dead bolts as slowly and quietly as I could. They drew back with a faint click. I waited nervously after each one clicked back, listening for my parents door to fly open with my fathers heavy footsteps tumbling out like a madman. But they never came. I opened the door and stepped out onto the porch. My ball sat 15 yards away, looking lonely in the driveway. I was prepared to make a mad dash for it. Run over, pick it up, run back, lock the doors, sneak back upstairs, and go to bed- Dad would be none the wiser. But before I could take off down the driveway, I was distracted by a rustling noise coming from the cornfield, to my left. The cornstalks were about six-foot by then, and shining a pale green under the moonlight. A mans muffled scream came from the corn. My heart leaped. The corn was restless. The stalks rustled back and forth in the center of the field, and then came another muffled scream. I froze, and my knees became watery. The scarecrows. They were not in their usual spots. They were close together, in the center of the corn field, their hooded heads poking out over the top of the stalks. And they were moving. The corn rustled violently as did the scarecrows. They moved about wildly, as if they were wrestling with something. Another muffled scream. I watched on wide-eyed and frozen with terror as the scarecrows fought with something among the cornstalks. I thought that this was surely a bad dream. A terrible dream. A nightmare. And, in a sense, it was a nightmare, just not the kind you can wake up from. The muffled scream cut off abruptly. The scarecrows froze for a moment, their hoods ruffling gently in the breeze. They craned their heads, and their straw faces- featureless but somehow ingrained with hatred- settled on me. I was seeing something I should not be seeing. A shiver trickled down my spine. Somewhere in the distance, a crow called. Caw-caw. I was just about to scream when a hand grasped the back of my pajama collar and pulled me backwards into the house. I was flung to the ground by Dad. He stepped around me and slammed the door shut, then locked the two deadbolts. They drew shut with an emphatic shunk. I waited for Dad to turn around with a look of rage, but what I saw scared me worse. He had looked at me, not with rage, but terror. It was the first time I had seen him scared, and I would see him this scared only once more, just a few weeks later. I started to cry. Seeing him scared had scared me more than his rage ever could have. “Its okay, ” he said shakily. “Youre okay, Timmy. ” He bent down and scooped me up. He carried me to my room as I cried, and he tucked me into bed, saying one thing repeatedly: “Youre okay, Timmy. Youre okay. ” A murder of crows flew overhead, moving strangely silent. I stood in the middle of the field. The once rich soil now sick. Up close I could see it had taken on a greyish hue. And there was something else, too. It was rumbling slightly, as if it were hungry. I readied my shovel and paused. I asked myself: Do I really want to do this? What purpose did it serve? What would it change? Nothing. So why had I come back? Closure- that was why. I could not move on if I did not have closure, nor could I heal. The nightmares would continue, the anxiety would persist, and my soul would continue to whittle and seep from wounds that wondering fingers of doubt kept prodding open. I had to see if it was all real. I could not let questions linger. Could such horror exist in this world, or were my memories simply warped and exaggerated with time? So, did I want to do this? Yes. The answer was always yes. I should have come back years ago. Maybe then I would not have suffered so long. Closure- that is what I needed. I pierced the soil with my shovel. My door had burst open in the middle of the night. Dad was in the doorway, a rifle slung over his shoulder. “We need to go, ” he said. I sat up groggily. “What? ” “We need to go, ” he pulled me out from under the blanket. “Whats going on, Dad? ” “We need to go. ” “Why! ” He pulled me along at his side as we rushed down the stairs. His deep wrinkles and tanned skin, his strong jaw and sunken eyes, his pointed nose and thin lips, all twisted in an expression of terror. Terror like what had plastered his face the night he had caught me outside after dark. only worse. “Dad, where is Mom? ” “I thought I did everything right, ” he said absently. “I dont know what I did wrong. The pylons maybe? ” The front door was already hanging open when he dragged me through it. Outside, the corn was restless again. “I dont know what I did wrong, ” Dad said. “I dont know how I didnt hear them come in. ” Dad dragged me to the pick-up truck in the driveway. A womans muffled screams came from the corn. I looked over my shoulder toward the field to see the hooded heads bobbing around wildly again. “Dad, wheres Mom? ” I said with increasing urgency. “I thought I did everything right. I dont know why it went wrong, ” he opened the pick-ups passenger door and threw me inside. “Dad, where is Mom! ” I screamed. He shut the door in my face. He walked around the front of the pick-up, and for a moment he paused to look back at field and the scarecrows. The shotgun trembled in his hands. For what it is worth, I think he would have tried to save her if it was not for me. He continued around the car and climbed into the front seat. He fumbled with the keys in his trembling hands before inserting and turning them. The engine rumbled to life. “Dad! Tell me! Wheres Mom! ” He reversed suddenly, swinging the car around so the front end pointed down the driveway, away from the house. He slammed the stick into first gear and took off with a lurch. The dirt clattered the underneath of the truck as we went. “Wheres mom! ” I cried shrilly. He began to sob. “Im sorry! I dont know what I did! I thought I did everything right! Im sorry Tim. Im sorry, Sarah. Oh god, Sarah, Im so sorry! ” I cowered back into my seat, feeling the car bounce over the bumpy road as we fled. My father cried, and so did I as we drove off into the night, leaving the farm, and Mom, behind. I tossed aside the first clump of soil. Underneath the topsoil the dirt was grey and pale as bone. I continued to dig, tossing the soil in a heap to the side, where it trembled subtly. Then I hit something with a hollow thud. I threw away the shovel and got to my knees. I reached into the hole and brushed aside the dirt. I uncovered what I expected, yet feared at the same time. A human skull. I plucked it from the dirt and held it up with shaking hands. The hollow eye sockets stared vacantly back at me. I put it aside and reached into the hole again. I clawed at the dirt frantically with my bare hands. There were more bones. Skulls. Hands. Femurs. I pawed and pawed at the dirt. I dug until my fingernails were torn clean off. It was true. It was all true. There is evil in this world. My memories had not lied. I fell back on my ass, exhausted, terrified, despaired. A pile had formed around me. So many skulls. So many bones. All from the souls that had fed the soil.

Source: Hey everyone, I wanted to try a little experiment with our communications and put together a longer look at where Destiny has been over the last few months and where it's heading next. I think it's important to take time to reflect on what's happened so we can show you where we're going. I'm calling this Director's Cut. Based on how long this ended up being, a key learning from this is "maybe there's a better way to communicate this than a GIANT WALL OF TEXT. Let me know. I also may like doing it in a different format in the future, I'll let you know. Today, I'm going to talk about more than just the Destiny game and talk some about how we build Destiny and the effects it can have on the team. I think transparency about the game is important and I also want to be transparent about the work required. Sound OK? That's rhetorical, because a wall of text is coming up. We're making a lot of changes to Destiny 2 with Shadowkeep and New Light. We want Destiny 2 to be an amazing action MMO, in a single, evolving world, that you can play anytime, anywhere with your friends. I'm going to keep referencing that. All the time. Until its true. And then, I'm going to keep referencing it until it's good enough. * 10 Thoughts on the Last Six Months (Looking Back) Overall, there are some things about Annual Pass that worked out very well and some real learnings for us along the way. The Annual Pass was a big transition for us. We've been moving away from DLC and trying to provide more ongoing reasons to play Destiny. I wanted to start the State of the Game series by looking back at how we got here. I'm going to largely focus on Season of the Drifter to near-present day. * We set up a calendar of content, showed you the plan early, and delivered it. * A lot of you love Destiny for the chase on the way to improving your characters. Between the Annual Pass drops, questlines, and events in between, the team did a great job of providing stuff to do, items to chase, growing fat with strength, et cetera. Destiny history has had many content droughts, but not this year. * But, the Annual Pass was harder on the team than we anticipated. * The scope of what we delivered, the pace that we delivered it, and the overall throughput for Annual Pass takes a toll on the Bungie team. I- and many others- had conversations throughout the year with team members- who had jumped from release to release- about the grind of working on Destiny. Working on the game was starting to wear people down. Here's an example: During the annual pass, we invented new, bespoke ways to earn rewards each season. Black Armory had its bounties, Season of the Drifter had the "Reckoning Machine. Season of Opulence had its Chalice. Each of these mechanics - each with their own lessons - were valuable, but also put the team into an unsustainable development cycle. We needed to develop a more systemic, standardized set of mechanics for progression to keep our teams healthier. We're going to take this problem on in D2Y3. We have a Powerful sources problem As the game's weekly sources of Power grew and Destiny grew with it, this - at times - could really feel like a chore. Each season brought with it new Powerful sources and optimizing your character meant that you were maybe still running three story missions every week or returning to the Dreaming City months after those first few magical trips from last fall. I feel like we needed to do a better job of shifting Powerful sources. We could explore things like changing the value of Powerful sources to create new seasonal efficiencies or retire some Powerful sources as we bring new sources into the game. Simply put, I wish we'd been able do more seasonal curation of the game. Season of the Drifter Thoughts, Part I I like Gambit Prime. It felt like a great refinement of Gambit to me. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Matches end quicker, so it feels more efficient. The invading frequency feels lower, so I can Collect and dunk. I think there's something cool about the roles, although the requirements to get a full set online to inhabit a role meant not enough folks got to appreciate the playstyle diversity. In the future, we're going to have to make a choice: Which Gambit is the Highlander of Gambits. Prime or Classic. This isn't just about removing stuff from Destiny 2. but the game cannot grow infinitely forever - it's about focusing refinements and evolutions to the Gambit ecosystem. We think Gambit is sweet and deserves more ongoing support and we want to ultimately focus that support on whichever mode ends up being the Highlander. There can be only one. That said, we hear you that not everyone is excited about a season that overly focuses on one part of the game. Destiny is a game with a lot of breadth and we agree that this season felt too specialized. Season of the Drifter Thoughts, Part II aka Let's Talk About Reckoning (and Encounter Design) The first time I used Phoenix Protocol at home, I knew it was over. It's an exotic coat that refills my Well of Radiance and then refills itself as I "slay. so that I can continue to place my Well of Stand Here to be Borderline Invulnerable and Deal Tons of Damage. Datto has a great video that talks about Well of Radiance's effect on the PVE game. I wondered, How are we ever going to make content that fairly challenges players again? With Reckoning in Season of the Drifter, we got a taste of what kind of content we'd need to build to challenge Protocol-wearing Warlocks. Matchmade encounters that accost you from all directions, plant snipers off in the distance, and put players in between a pincher attack of many whelps, handle it (I wanted to link a thing here, but it's definitely not T for Teen) and giant bosses (also eff you Knight Taken guy. This is what it had to be. We were breaking encounter rules left, right, and center on the Reckoning bridge, in no small part due to players in always-active Wells of Radiance becoming invulnerable gods, holding all six infinity stones all the time. In Reckoning, we set out to build an activity that could be relatively easy at Tier 1 and scale up to very challenging at Tier 3. We have an internal team here codenamed: Velveeta (they were formed in the wake of the Crota's End modem-unplugging debacle to help find the cheesiest things to do/use in the challenging PVE portions of the game) – these players are some of our craftiest. Once Velveeta can get close to beating something, or beat it outright, that becomes an important data point on our "is this hard enough. evaluation. We give them a bunch of tips like "here's how this works, can you beat it? ”, so if they can, it's a good indicator of the action game and gear game working together. Let's talk about encounter design. Generally, in activities we expect players to complete alone (dungeons, raids, zero hour-type activities can play by a different set of properties. or in matchmade groups, there are a number of guidelines we use when we build them. We don't want to spawn enemies behind the player. We want players to play a game of taking space from enemies. We want players to have cover where their shields and health can recharge, or where they get to be smart using geometry, movement, ability and gunplay to dig enemies out of cover, and make interesting decisions about target prioritization. We want players to be able to understand where in the space enemies will come from, and if we're going to reverse the combat front on players (AKA spawn enemies behind them, we want to telegraph that. We use dropships, spawn clouds, audio cues, all kinds of tricks to try and prepare players for reinforcements. As character power was dramatically increasing (more on reasons for this increase later on) the encounter rules got thrown out the window. To summarize this: Destiny had sweet gear and in order to create challenge in the Reckoning we broke a bunch of our encounter design philosophy. That sweet gear, coupled with the encounter design meant the number of ways to viably/efficiently progress was dramatically reduced. We want Destiny to be a game where you have lots of choices with your character, build what you choose to do, and funneling those choices down to only one in Reckoning is something we don't want to repeat. There's more about damage and player power sprinkled in this update, and even more on the rest. Last, last note: I think it's totally sweet when an activity challenges you to use something other than your favorite item. I don't think the whole game should work that way, but when it's time to bust some shields on the Shanks in Zero Hour, I had a use for that Distant Relation scout rifle in my vault. Season of the Drifter Thoughts, Part III aka Now Let's Talk about Difficulty and Touch on Sandbox Nerfs I started to talk about challenge/difficulty above and drifted (heh heh) to encounter difficulty. But, it's all related. When the media would come to play our Halo games for an event, we'd always recommend they play the game on Heroic. Heroic changed a bunch about Halo combat – it made enemy weapons more accurate (but not too accurate) enemies would fire more frequently (which made you feel like a hero when you dodged them) it increased projectile speed; and Heroic lowered player outgoing damage (so that the enemies would survive longer and make their way further through their behavior tree - and therefore appear more intelligent. There's more than just the above going on, but that's a quick summary of some of the changes. But here's why: we asked the media to play the game on Heroic, because when the game is challenging, overcoming the challenge feels incredible. Important to note here: Challenge isn't something universal. In an action game, challenge can be largely personal. One person's challenging might be easy to someone else. We've historically thought about the main Destiny campaigns as something we want to be pretty easy (I think D2's campaign was actually too easy at times) and as players push further into the post-game they'd be able to find more challenge. Across Destiny's history we haven't had enough challenge deep into the end game, and that's definitely something on our list as we head toward fall 2019. Overcoming challenges is a huge part of what makes an action game's moment-to-moment engaging. Action games are a delicate balance of growing stronger, the game rising up to push back, introducing new challenges that force you to learn/become more powerful/master a new element and. at their best. creating the fist pumping moment of celebration when you achieve victory. But Destiny has an RPG component, too. And the RPG component is about customization, optimization, and it's a way for players to choose how they overcome challenge. The entire time we've been making Destiny, the action game and the RPG have been fighting. It's the forever war. The RPG has the power to dramatically overcome the action game, and the action game has the power to render the RPG game irrelevant. It's a line - by nature - Destiny will always have to straddle. In order to create challenge during Season of the Drifter, we needed to break a bunch of encounter rules, have exotics like Phoenix Protocol basically function like a key (or hope you match with multiple Radiance Warlocks) which then unlocks success in the matchmade encounters of Reckoning. There's a really good video from Slayerage on this in the context of the nerfs we made heading into Season of Opulence. Those nerfs also saw Whisper of the Worm get its day in court. If I could turn back time, we'd probably not run Whisper as the original Black Hammer infinite ammo design. However, considering the year before had Destiny 2 feeling very restrictive and power-limited, I think we did the best that we could with the knowledge and intuition we had last summer. Whisper was an outlier that lets you stand still at a safe distance, in a pool that makes you borderline invulnerable, never having to reload or relocate for ammo, and allow players to deal piles and piles of damage on giant bosses who aren't threatening. This isn't your fault! It's ours! We're making some stuff too easy and allowing players to circumvent parts of the game! Mechanics that circumvent the ammo game (relocate to pick up ammo bricks) or completely ignore the reload animations (a critical part of weapon tuning) are mechanics that create the kind of outliers that we ultimately have to tamp down before the game spirals into the boss health version of Reckoning bridges. The other significant set of changes we made to the game during this time were taking down the Super Snowball exotics. With as powerful as Destiny Supers have become (they are - on the whole - dramatically more powerful than Destiny 1's Supers) using your Super to recover your Super is an amplification to player power that the challenge and difficulty game can't keep up with. But, we're going to talk about Supers much later on. Difficulty and challenge are important parts of mastery. There are more changes coming in Shadowkeep (buffs to things like Scout Rifles, nerfs to mechanics that circumvent the ammo economy, refactoring of the way damage stacking rules work. we're gonna talk about it in the next episode. Season of Opulence, Part I: the Pursuits tray is a Caterpillar in a Cocoon–Questlog is the Beautiful Butterfly I've seen streams and videos of people beating activities in Destiny blindfolded. I cannot imagine developing the muscle memory and memorization (nevermind the thumbskill required) to be good at Destiny with the blast shield down. When things fundamentally change in a way that interrupts muscle memory and mastery, it is frustrating. The initial set of changes to the Pursuits tray earlier this year did a few things beyond upsetting muscle memory. It certainly didn't get as far as the team wanted in its initial release and it also didn't feel like an improvement over what previously existed. It felt like we started to redecorate your house but we didn't finish it (and sometimes, that's how things in a live game can feel. The morning after the Pursuits changes went live, I talked to some folks on the UI team about the feature. They had Reddit open. "Have you read it, Luke? "Nah, I haven't. " Please don't. " They were crestfallen. Not just because of the sometimes-harsh-feeling feedback, but because this team wanted make something sweet, exceed your expectations, and meet their own expectations. None of those things happened. We wanted to try something different with Pursuits, in the sense that we knew where we wanted this feature to end up, but that we'd take some iterative steps to get there. I think we've got to do a better job ensuring that while we're remodeling your house, the potential of the renovation is clearer either in the game or via some communication here on the site. We want a Questlog with great tracking that can help players prioritize what to do next. Oh, and this fall, bounties will be separated from quests and PC players can assign a hot key that takes them directly to the Pursuits menu. Image Link imgur Season of Opulence, Part II: The Evolving Eververse Last year, we thought long and hard about Eververse and how we wanted to change the strategy around microtransactions in Destiny. As some folks have smartly pointed out, MTX is a big part of our business being a live game. I'm not going to say "MTX funds the studio" or "pays for projects like Shadowkeep. it doesn't wholly fund either of those things. But it does help fund ongoing development of Destiny 2, and allows us to fund creative efforts we otherwise couldn't afford. For example: Whisper of the Worm's ornaments were successful enough that it paid [dev cost-wise] for the Zero Hour mission/rewards to be constructed (this shit matters. The storefront, which we launched alongside Season of Opulence is the first part of the strategic shift we're making with MTX. The decision to run old content in Bright Engrams instead of making new Bright Engrams is another part of the shift. We want to believe that our players would rather just buy things they like from the store. Earlier this summer, we detailed a bunch of the changes coming to Bright Dust and Eververse this fall (and if you haven't read that, go check it out here. The storefront is going to get another round of enhancements this fall, too. We're going to move it to the Director, so you don't have go to the Tower and see Tess to interact with it. We're giving it some Class specific content, so if you're on your Titan looking for Titan Universal Ornaments with smaller shoulders, you'll see Titan armor on one of the store's subpages. We're also going to make it so that the pieces you've already acquired from a given set reduce the Silver price of the set. For instance, if you are 3/5 Optimacy set on your Titan, the cost to finish the set in Silver will be reduced by 60. There are some other philosophies here that we haven't made explicitly clear: We have made deliberate choices related to cosmetic items and not having them come from gameplay. Gameplay rewards are where you get items, power, mods, perk combinations, stats, triumphs, and titles. The aesthetics for armor blurs the line some – we want players to get cool armor from activities and the world that feel thematic to where they were acquired. Cosmetic items like universal ornaments, weapon ornaments, shaders, ships, sparrows, emotes, and finishers typically come from the store (There are exceptions, but generally speaking, that's how we think about this. We are continuing to try and separate capability/gameplay from vanity. Armor 2. 0 and Universal Ornaments are big parts of this separation. This is also why Finisher perks are mods that can be socketed into equipment, so that their aesthetic can stand alone. As always, we welcome your feedback and thoughts. Season of Opulence, Part III: The Menagerie is Sweet Have you ever been to an amazing party for something like the Super Bowl? It's the kind of party where there is an incredible spread of snacks rolling out throughout the event, amazingly comfortable seating, an A/V system and TV that makes you jealous, and super sweet people to hang out with. Once you've been to this party. the Super Bowl anywhere else never feels the same (invite me back somedayyyyyyyyy. This is how I feel about Escalation Protocol. Once I had the feeling of running around in public bubbles, fighting giant bosses with a bunch of players (even though getting into a good instance of Mars for Protocol was a pain in the butt. public gameplay never felt the same. At its peak, when you have a bunch of players slaying big ol' bosses, Escalation Protocol is one of the best things we've added to Destiny 2. The Menagerie - a six-player matchmade activity where you make progress no matter what - is awesome. Its "learn-by-watching mechanics" means that it doesn't require communication between players. The way groups can make progress - even if they don't kill the boss - means the real efficiency gain is by learning and executing the fights quickly. Hasapiko, Beloved by Calus. and also beloved by me. feels like a great translation of World of Warcraft's Heigan the Unclean* into an action game. There's a lot to like about the Menagerie, but I'm going to close the activity part here with: We love the Menagerie, it's a great middle spot on a six-player activity pyramid, with Raids sitting at the top. Escalation Protocol (aka Partying in Public) is a great base. We want to do more activities like this, but in the context of what we learned and in a way that we can better support them over the long-term. Season of Opulence, Part IV: The Chalice of Opulence and Somehow Even More Season of the Drifter Thoughts Having some ways to target and farm some specific gear in Destiny is great. We did a version of this with Black Armory weapons but the very, very long character-specific attunement questline for the Forges was a bit much. We made the Opulence attunement account-wide as a result. The Chalice was an even bigger version of targeting rewards. Players could unlock different sets of armor, different weapons, and even select their Masterwork perk roll. *Pause on Chalice thoughts. * We will come back to the Chalice. Let's talk about how we build the game. While content for Destiny is released serially, it is largely developed in parallel. For instance, while Forsaken was in its final few months, Black Armory was well underway, and Season of the Drifter was in development while Black Armory was being built, et cetera. For years people have wondered "Why doesn't release X do the thing content drop Y did? Get it together, Bungie. " This is one of the reasons why. So even though Menagerie is sweet, and Chalice is great, while Shadowkeep was being built, the Menagerie and the Chalice hadn't yet been released. So we didn't know how players would react. Because we have so much to build, we frequently find ourselves having to place many bets at the same time. This has paid dividends at times – we discover new and awesome things like Escalation Protocol or Menagerie - and this has also resulted in things that feel like setbacks at other times. An example of a setback is the reward chase during Season of the Drifter. There are a bunch of super awesome weapons in Drifter (One Two Punch Last Man Standing) but the path to them isn't clear like Black Armory or the Chalice. We didn't do a good enough job of rewarding players for their time or giving them clearer paths to some of the sweet weapons in the release. If we had a do-over with this season's rewards we'd probably have dropped Armor directly from Prime and maybe used Reckoning combined with learnings from Menagerie's fail forward mechanics to let players chase awesome rolls on weapons they could love. While I got pretty lucky with a Rapid Hit Kill Clip Spare Rations, I personally had more fun chasing my Kindled Orchid or Austringer. *Unpause. Back to Chalice. * The Chalice isn't perfect. Being held hostage by THE rune you want to drop from a Strike or Crucible to go make the weapon or armor piece you're coveting is pretty frustrating. But having more ways in the game to pursue loot in a deterministic fashion, while preserving the hunt for a great roll, is something that we hope to explore. Things left unsaid-ish while looking back There's a lot a lot a lot of awesome stuff we didn't spend time talking about (Tribute Hall, Lumina, that cool Drifter cinematic with the Taken Captain, lore books, Vanguard/Drifter choice, et cetera. Full disclosure: I'm almost always going to focus on opportunities for improvement, rather than celebration! Renault presses two googly-eyes to the lid of the trash can. The black pupils jiggle inside their plastic cases. “Is Oscar the Grouch, no? ” he laughs to me. “Oscar lives inside the can, Rennie. ” “He is looking at you. ” Renault twists his fingers creepily. “Come with me Chloé to inside of my trash. ” “Always a clown, even when old, ” I respond. “I am too old to be serious! I am too young to be dead! ” Like all of our group, Renault has always been the trickster. His proudest moment came years ago, when the news broadcast video of an ambulance mysteriously parked on the first deck of the Eiffel Tower. Secretly, he was ecstatic, but outwardly, dismissive. “They never report the message, ” complained Renault, referring to what he had spray-painted across the windshield. “It was come to heal the ugly Eiffel Tower of ‘Art Attack! ” How he had lifted the vehicle into the tower was never explained. Ask Renault and he would spin a tale so grandiose it would evolve into his next prank. To him, the appeal was the mystery, the trick of how it all happened. Over the years his output had slowed. It used to be that he would spend all afternoon with four or five of our friends, just crossing a street. Once he crossed he would skitter through the Metro underground, and emerge on the side he had first crossed from, only to cross again. Space the friends apart, time it correctly, and cars are held indefinitely. The increasingly frustrated drivers see Renault cross in a false mustache, cross twirling an umbrella, cross in a wheelchair, cross while juggling. At some point the exasperated drivers admit defeat and U-turn back the way they had come. Then we cheer and congratulate our victory in the war against flowing traffic. But now Renaults ponytail was grey and his shoulders stooped. Decades of smoking have clotted his voice. He can still walk quickly, important for vacating scenes should his prank fail, but there are few new pranks, preferring, instead, to commemorate the old. This is not shameful, for what is the point if not to create memories? Nostalgia conquers all, in the end. I had not seen Renault in years––had not seen any of them, really, and it seems as though they have not seen much of each other, either. Our merry group reconvened this weekend to mourn the loss of our defacto leader, our spiritual centre: Achille, who had befriended us one-by-one and bid us join him underground, deep within the uncharted regions of the Paris catacombs. No one loved the catacombs as much as Achille, and he had kilometre upon kilometre of the sweaty passages mapped out, not on paper, but in his mind. He could navigate them better than a shopping market aisle, or a cubicle farm, or a conversation with the typical French bourgeois. It was Achille who had discovered, while scouring the natural collapse of one outlying tunnel, our grotto. It had been carved out by water that still flowed along the far edge, fresh water that could be drunk after boiled. He appointed it our clubhouse, our house-less home, and from then forth weekends were spent in the cavern, getting high while stooping low. At some point into our residency someone found a way to wire into the city grid, and through a snakepit of extension cords our cave had lights and music. We had the best raves. One time over forty people came, all on PCP, engrossed in the natural beauty of the caves and the anonymous rhythms of dance music. We slept underground, too. Some would call it surreal, but the only surreality I felt was upon returning to the surface world, with its infants and telephones and sushi restaurants. I was never more alive than when I was underground. But all good things must end, and life unraveled our tight-knit collective. Me? I married and moved to Munich, then divorced, but remained there. I lost touch with the other catacombers. Anyway, my true love affair was not with humans, but with the caves themselves. Achille continued to update his “joyeux farceurs” via email with the details of his ongoing underground expeditions. Sometimes he ogled a particular limestone formation with his left eye––his right was glass from when he had tumbled and landed poorly on his face. Other times he wasted three hours attempting to access a barred passage. One time he disturbed what looked like the aftermath of a Satanic ritual. A cat had been killed and burned, and its blood was spread about the dirt. I hesitated to open his emails for some time after. Increasingly, though, his emails warned of “dwellers”. Over the years the catacombs had become overrun with thrill-seekers, people probably not too different from ourselves who were looking to escape the mundane grind. Achille resented them, considered them insincere. His emails painted them as subhuman, artless rabble-rousers––cultural predators. I thought it a bit much. I disliked the hollow elitism that the lawless are tempted to adopt. Everyone likes the catacombs, so why shouldnt others enjoy them as we do? We are not so special. At the head of the procession Danielle unlocks what resembles a storage shed. The open door reveals, inside, a spiral staircase descending into the earth. This is not the catacombs entrance nearest to our cavern, but to honour Achille we are taking the scenic route. Four hours later we meet our final obstacle: a two-metre sheer rock face. By now we have left the artificiality of the catacombs and are spelunking natural formations. This is uncharted territory. Off the map. Away from contact. Exactly how we like it. “Has it grown? ” complains Thérèse. “I do not remember it so big. ” “Help me, please, ” Renault wants a foothold up. Alain laces his fingers together and heaves Renaults boot upwards. Once atop, he helps the rest of us clamber beside him, first taking backpacks, then people. Last to mount is Lucien, who is not shorter than Renault yet weighs far more. It takes two of us hauling each arm to help him up. How had Lucien gained so much weight? Of our group, he was the only to remain with Achille through the years, plunging dutifully into the depths after his fearless companion. I was never close with him, despite the many hours spent together. Atop, Lucien smiles and points to a ladder, hidden in a dark corner at the bottom of the cliff. Of course. How else could he and Achille have mounted the cliff alone? “Connard! Why you not say? ” demands Danielle. “I believe you want the real experience, no? ” responds Lucien smugly. “I am fifty-three years old! I want a car to carry me at this age. ” “But you climb so fast I think the ladder will insult you. ” Danielle smiles glibly, “Aha! Flattery! It will work every time, mon chèr. ” Up ahead Renault and Alain slam their shoulders into the oak door that blocks the entrance to our cavern, our hideout. “Is new, yes? ” Renault breathes heavily. “Yes––installed to protect from dwellers. ” Lucien twists a key in the doors black iron lock. It clanks satisfyingly. “Oh, please, Lucien. You cannot believe such ravings! ” complains Alain. Frustration creases Luciens brow. His eyes glare. “But, Lucien, you cannot be serious! ” Luciens response drips with acid. “Have you forgotten Achilles desire? To seal the catacombs? ” This was how Achilles final email ended, with a request to forever blockade the entrances to the unmapped catacombs. At the time I considered it another prank, considering how Achille had spent his life. “Will you deny our friends dying wish? ” spat Lucien. “But to seal the catacombs? All of the catacombs? ” “How many entrances? How many tunnels? ” inquires Danielle. “It is not possible. ” Lucien turns away to shove the door open. “ Every door must be closed––forever, ” he mutters resentfully. Danielle throws a look to Alain. And we are inside. It is not as I remembered––I had prepared myself for the inevitable disappointment––but still it is beautiful. The ceiling is high, the air is fresh and more water than ever flows against the back wall. “Honey! We are home! ” Thérèse calls. “My love! My faithful! After all this time you have waited for me! ” Renaults voice echoes from the domed walls. Lucien flicks a power bar and the cavern is bathed in light, not the tungsten yellow of household bulbs, but the hued lighting used in art installations. Some of the lights rotate slowly about the space. Lucien flicks another switch and the room is saturated with David Bowies “Underground”. “And the party begins! ” Danielle retrieves a stack of red Solo cups and a bottle of absinthe from her pack. “Will we mix it with the stream water? ” “For you, it will be my pleasure, ” Renault bends over the underground stream and fills an electric kettle. The others mill about, unpacking their bags. “Did he come? ” Alain asks Thérèse as they unravel sleeping bags and air mattresses. “But of course! ” she retrieves a stuffed carrot from her bag. “Monsieur Carrote! It has been too long. Perhaps he remembers me? ” “He brags every day of his homoerotic past. It makes me feel unwanted. ” “Selfish plant! He is too popular. He does not understand loneliness. ” “I have invited this friend too, ” Thérèse flashes a plastic bag of acid tablets. “Is for old times, yes? ” And so the night continues. My psychosis requires me to refuse the hallucinogens. Instead I sip lightly from wine that I brought. It is to everyones benefit that I remain sober, anyways, because one must watch over the others while they trip. Together we dance and slack to a corny mix of “underground” music: Tom Waits “Underground”, The Jams “Going Underground”, Ben Folds Fives “Underground”, The Sneaker Pimps “6 Underground”, and, of course, anything by The Pixies, who have no songs titled “underground”, but are beloved by us all. At some point Lucien locks the door. “Why, Lucien? ” complains Alain. “To protect from dwellers, ” he insists. “They are all about at this time. ” “Let them in! We will make them our friends, ” suggests Renault. “These are not friends like us. ” “Lucien! Impolite! We are not so special! ” “You misunderstand, Rennie. These are dangerous. These are the ones who do not go to the surface. ” “How can this be? Dont be silly. ” “They are here! They are in with me…in my miiiiiiiiii…” “Please, care for Thérèse. She is in no state for this talk. ” I move to Thérèse, who is dancing even though the music has stopped. “Thérèse, dear, if you point to the bad people they will explode and never come back. ” Her finger jets forward. She laughs. “He is so gooey! ” “Good girl! Keep pointing. You will kill every monster. ” Like a commando John Travolta, her pointing fingers slice the air above her. Her hips sway with every thrusted arm. Her tongue makes clicking, splashing sounds as invisible “dwellers” burst into goo. I see Lucien hang the key on a nail driven into the door itself. It is good that the key is accessible to all, because so long as the door is locked there is no way to exit without it. The key is gone. I have left the sleeping nook to not wake the others while I smoke, and the key is gone. Where is Lucien? I brush my hand against the door. It looks shut, but is actually ajar. I struggle the heavy door open and stare down the cold tunnel. Distantly, at the bottom of the two-metre cliff, a light flickers. I am drawn to it. The door clanks shut behind me. I whirl in a panic, and there is Lucien, locking the door. He has his pack with him. He is not happy to see me. “Chloé! So good to see you. We must leave, now. ” “Open the door Lucien. ” “I am not able. The dwellers are active, more active than I predicted. Chloé, they are here, and we must seal the tunnels before they reach the surface. ” “Stop this, Lucien. ” Since when did he become so manic? He used to be passive, quiet, forever sporting a dopey smile. A gentle, dumb giant. Now he is…frenzied. He acts like he is being hunted. “There is so much you do not know about these catacombs, Chloé. ” “Lucien, the door, open it. Why do you have your things? ” “I must leave. Come with me and you will be safe. I promise. The others…” he looks to the chamber forlornly. “They do not believe the danger. It is how Achille died, you know. ” “Achille? Do not disrespect his death! Let me in. I didnt even bring my shoes. ” Lucien sees that I am barefoot. Really, I was only stepping outside to smoke. He sighs. “I will wait. Gather your things. Then we must leave. ” Bullshit. If I go back in he will lock me in with the others. “Give me the key and I will lock the door from inside. ” “I cannot do that, Chloé. You will open the door too early and let in the dwellers. ” He speaks quickly. His voice raises in pitch. “We can return for our friends next evening, when it is safe. They will be angry, I know they will, but it is not so long to wait, really. ” By the time he says “really” he is speaking at the height of his voice. He sounds like a young child. “Then lets get them now and we–” “ Now Chloé. There is no time. Now. ” Lucien leaves down the passage, striding far too briskly for me to follow, should I choose to. I see his flashlight beaming the path before him. And my light, my only light? A Bic for my cigarettes. Everything else––my wallet, my flashlight, my shoes––is locked inside the grotto. Soon it is dark. I flick my lighter awake, but it is too weak to lift the heavy darkness. How long will the fluid last? Another twenty minutes? “Wait! ” I see the beam of his flashlight––and then it is gone. Where did he go? Into the flickering light below the cliff. He has already descended, so quickly! I rush forth. Without him I may never see light again, at least not until he returns this evening, however long away that is. But he is moving so fast, and––ouch! ––there are so many stones! At the cliffs edge I see the whole catacombs bathed in light. The light is so strong, stronger than the simple lightbulbs installed intermittently in the passages. It makes me feel warm. “Hello? ” “Sshhhhht! ” Lucien is behind me. I had not noticed him because he has turned his flashlight off. “Lucien, what is this? ” I say loudly to annoy him. He has exasperated me. The glow from the passage is supernatural. A being steps out from it. “Hello up there! ” She looks directly at me. It is a woman. A normal woman, like me, though younger, possibly in her early-forties. Beneath flowing black hair she wears a grey halter top and cargo shorts. She is thin, but strong. She must hike the catacombs often. “Did you stay the night? We did too. It was nice this time, not too cool. ” She speaks guardedly, as though she is unsure how friendly to be. “Yes, we did! We do so often, though not lately. ” “Silence Chloé! More will come! ” Its a woman. One woman. Why is he so scared of one woman? Even if she is a bandit, we are separated by the cliff. I continue rebelliously, “Is that your light? It is so bright! ” The woman looks confused. “The light? We do not live in darkness! Of course we have light, normal light from the power. ” A man joins her. He wears blue jeans. “Celeste, who is there? ” “Chloé! Back! Now! ” He means to whisper, but it is a vicious hiss. The mans eyes focus. He sees Lucien. “Oh, it is you, the crazy man. But you have a friend. Hello, friend. I hope you are more kind than your crazy man. He is dangerous, I hope to tell you. He hit my brother with a pipe and cracked his rib. Go away crazy man. Friend, what is your name? ” To hell with Lucien. “Chlo–” The woman shrieks. The mans eyes grow wide as eggs as he lunges forward. “Watch–! ” But it is too late. My head hits the side of the cavern and I fall as though dead. “Little butterfly, wake up. Wake up please. ” No. No thank you. It hurts too much. “Come now. I see your eyelids flutter like little butterfly wings. I know you hear me. ” Who is that? I open my eyes and see the woman, the monster that Lucien was so afraid of. She stayed with me after my own friend knocked my head against the cave wall and left me for dead, left me alone, barefoot, no equipment, in the uncharted catacombs. The bastard. “Ah! There you are. Move slowly––you took a mighty hit. We tried to warn you, that man is dangerous. We know him. He is here so many times and he is never good to us. ” I am… …still atop the cliff. I can see that. The passage still glows below me. The woman––the dweller––she is beside me. “You want water? I can get you some. ” “Please… my friends… are locked–” “Ah, yes, but we know. They are locked behind the door and need a key. My family chases your man right now to get your key. He will open the door, yes? He is bad. How do you know him? It is no matter. Rest now, speak later. ” It takes some time, but eventually I am able to sit upright. Later, when I can stand, I go to the door and shout for Renault, for Danielle––for anyone––but receive no answer. I have nothing with me––no clock, no light, no phone, no shoes. It might even be morning, now, and in that land above, so far, so remote, the sun might be warming Paris. I want to go home. Get me home. I will give you anything. Anything. Did I ever even like the catacombs? Was I ever truly enchanted? Or did I only come out of disgust with civility? Was I like every other petulant twenty year-old, so intent on changing the world that I rehearsed abandoning it forever? I hate this place. Fuck the catacombs. The fastest route to the surface, twenty-five minutes, runs through a derelict ossuary where bones are scattered in a way that will trip one who is not careful. In other sections, the sections meant for tourists, the bones are arranged aesthetically, but elsewhere they are heaped. That is fine. I will go through the ossuary. I will be careful. To my companions astonishment I step down the ladder leaning against the cliff. She cries out, “Madame, no! Please wait! You are still injured! ” but I ignore her. The wooden rungs spear my naked feet. “Is not safe! Madame, you have nothing! ” From the cliff her hand shoots out to seize me by the shoulder. Her grip hurts. It pinches far more sharply than fingers should be able to. Her skin… it… does it flake? Pieces fall from her. Her hand cracks loudly as it clenches. Such things have been said about those who live without sunlight, that the skin dies though the body lives. She must have been in the catacombs for quite some time. She sees me marvel and turns away, ashamed. “Im sorry…” I apologize. How rude of me! “Are you hurt? I didnt mean to…” “It is no matter. It is how it is. ” “Do you live…here? In the catacombs? ” Her hair swishes against her neck as she twists to see me. Her slight smile reveals that she is trying to be brave. “You are not so special. You come and go as you please, but we––we are here. We always will be. ” I am not so… special? Where had I heard that before? The dweller speaks again to excuse my silence, “Me, my friends, we want to leave the caverns and go above––how badly we want to! But it is not to be. ” “Why? ” She hesitates to answer, so I rephrase, “Even I can only stay for a day or two at a time. I cannot imagine living here forever. ” She is searching for the words to respond. This is difficult for her. “There are many reasons, a different one for every person. One murdered with cause, but will be apprehended should he return. Another is pursued by his family and wants to be free of them. Still, there are some who surface for brief moments, then remember that their true home is below the earth. After all this time, our community is all we have, and we care for each other. No one needs a thing––everything is given. We are all we have. ” “How long have you been here? ” “We? For longer than I know. You may think me a new arrival, ” again, her mischievous grin. What a strange person. Scuffling is heard distantly down the passage, then nearer. Out of the light below the cliff Lucien is shoved forward. Two men follow him, watching carefully, as though they expect trouble. Although Lucien is larger than each of them, he could never overtake both at once. “Lucien! ” “There she is. Now give her the key. ” There is something wrong with Luciens face. Was he beaten? The flesh around his jaw has swollen. Good. He left me alone in the dark, the psychopath. He should die. “You bastard! What have you done? What did you do, Lucien, you crazy fool? ” If hearing his response means hearing his voice then I want him to stay silent. “Answer me! ” “He cannot speak, ” this is the same man, the same dweller, that I saw earlier. He flashes a grin to the other male. “Perhaps we went too far? ” “He earned it, ” the new dweller responds serenely. Lucien spits into the dirt. His saliva is red with blood. “The key, friend, ” prods the first dweller, the male who wears jeans. Lucien looks at him resentfully. He opens his mouth, but only a couple empty vowels escape before he chokes on his spit. The first dweller laughs triumphantly, “No more conspiracies from this one! No more insults, too! ” Lucien straightens and glares hot spite. “What? What? ” the man taunts. Lucien spits a full throat of blood into his face. The man lurches backward, coated in Luciens life fluids. He looks horrified, enraged. Lucien smiles, painfully. “Thats it! You are not the first to die at my hand, love! ” “Hold! His friend is here. Whatever you do can be done away from her. ” “Please, ” I speak. “I dont care. Do what you will, but get me the key. I am sure he has the key with him. If we dont get it the rest of my friends will be trapped in that cave forever. ” “Careful! He is tricky. ” “I will take it from him, ” I slide down the cliff before the she-dweller can stop me, not even bothering with the ladder this time. The precipice scrapes my bare feet. Something goes wrong. My foot is snagged. I lose balance and land on my side. “Are you hurt? ” my female companion is shocked. “Help her! Dont just wait! ” But as the males rush to help, Lucien bodychecks one against the rock wall, then delivers a meaty fist into the others face. The man shrieks piercingly, like an infant would. The woman leaps off the precipice and lands strangely, on all fours. How is she so used to landing on her palms? Her back arches as Lucien boots her aside. “Waaahh Wooooaaaaaaaoooooooooohhhhhh aaaaaah OOOOOOOOwwwwaaaaeeee. ” What is so wrong with his speech? Suddenly I see––he has no tongue. That is beyond what my mind will process. It tightens. Will it snap? This is no time for such thoughts. Shoes or no shoes, I am running. Running. I will not stay––not for a key––not for those who cut out others tongues. Bones and bones and bones. Bones in fallen heaps. Bones lacerating the floor. I am in the ossuary when Lucien catches me. A path meanders through the detritus where others have trekked. But Lucien does not touch me––instead he beckons me follow him deeper. He has something he wants to show me. Why do I feel compelled to see it? The light is so bright. And where is it coming from? I would trace its source from the shadows, but there are none. But if I cover my eyes… yes. That is where the shadows hide. My head still throbs where it hit the wall. Lucien had not restrained himself even slightly. There was no care in his attack, no thought for what he might have done to me. The psycho-psycho-psychopath––haha––ha! Still, whatever his mad pursuit, he gave his tongue to it, and that is far worse than a headache. A throbbing headache, louder than the skulls on the ground that sing to me. Like a bloodhound, Lucien digs through a pile of bones. What has he hidden there? “Ah… the crazy man, ” the male dweller who wears blue jeans approaches from the far tunnel. “But you have a friend. I hope you are not like your crazy friend. ” “Stay back! ” I call. “We will hurt you again! I mean… I do not want to, but–” “Ah, so you are no butterfly, but a stinging wasp. Have we met, stinging wasp? ” It is the same man, I am sure of it. Blue jeans, vicious tone––but why is his face unmarked? The way Lucien hit him, I would have thought his nose broken. Yet his face is fresh, unharmed, except… what is that? His skin. It flakes. It is pale and it flakes. Panting and footsteps from behind me. It is the other man and the woman, but with them… the dweller wearing blue jeans. He is an exact duplicate––a doppelganger. The dweller who stands in front of me is indistinguishable from the dweller behind me. Even his speech is identical. Even the words he uses. I am a mirror through which each sees himself. Lucien finds his prize at the bottom of the bone heap and establishes it with a thunk atop of the pile. He faces the dwellers, defensive yet satisfied. I am confused. It is a skull. Lucien found a skull. But there are many skulls, all around. He, in fact, set this skull upon two others, amidst other bones. “Madame, your big friend will face our justice, but you are free to leave, ” the dweller beckons out the tunnel. Lucien gives me a skeptical look. I am not to trust dwellers. From inside the tunnel that I am beckoned to leave through, two more figures enter. It is the female, again, and another duplicate of the man who wears blue jeans. There are three now, all around me. I know––I will fly! I will crawl along the roof! “Cornered! ” crows the new-old-comer, the repeated offender. “Lucien…” Am I crying? For who? For him? “Truly I am sorry, Lucien. ” “Let her pass! ” The newest dweller holds his hand to his nose. Lucien really did break it. “Goodbye…Lucien. ” Lucien points to the skull emphatically. The dwellers close on us. He shakes the skull and finally I see the orb inside it. Wedged into the right socket, a glass eyeball stares at me, the same glass eye I have seen so many times, that has seen me so many times. It stares fiercely, reproachful, condemning those who had murdered its host, those who disbelieved the hosts warning. Oh my God, Im so sorry Achille. You are dead but for two weeks, and already your bones… so dry it might have been centuries. “Grab her! ” This from the dweller who previously advocated for my free passage. His hand has pulled from massaging his wounded face and I see… black. No nose, no blood, only black. His nose should be there, but instead…black. Empty black as dark as the hateful sun. I trip backwards, into the bone pile. I feel them fall upon me. Lucien makes the first move. He seizes the arm of the woman nearest and shucks it, like a cob of corn. Off falls the skin. Below: black. More black. Only black. Black as a beetle. How does she shriek with her mouth closed? It comes not from her mouth, but her hair. It stridulates––or is it below her hair? ––and the room vibrates with the sound of crickets. It is the rattle of a snake, the hiss of a cat…but all I see is the black blackness of what lies beneath. Even as she crumples her useless arm to her side, it is all I see. It sucks the light from the room and now it is dark. But I still see, because the black calls to me. Someone lifts me onto my blood-black feet and kicks me forward. The males leap at Lucien, and he is no match. The other female comes to me, but I run. I can still run. My feet bleed. Pebbles lodge in their skin, so I push from my toes. And the light. The passage basks in its glow. The light. The light is the best black. There are sounds. Sounds of people, of animals being tortured. A cat being burned behind me, though I run toward it, to take it and shake its blood over the unlit earth and I am not far from the surface so maybe… Drips from the ceiling. They are blood? They are red. But a blue-red. I mean they are clear, so I see through them. There are no drops, no drippities stop me from seeing. But the man is before me. He has no face. He has black. His jeans. And I see Achille. And I see Lucien. And Lucien says he is sorry for hurting me. Big Lucien, the hurter. And I am telling Thérèse to point at the bad people, and she points at Lucien, then laughs when he turns to goo. And I laugh because its so funny! And the ladder. I climb the ladder. Yep. more layover. sorry. first up was Waves movies sometimes connect with our memories in surprising ways. certain areas of the available visual space have tendencies to stir emotional or aesthetic reactions. what goes right in "Waves" is almost difficult to explain. the movie triumphs by pouring all its energies into the extremities of human experience, into conflict itself, and it still looks for social truths beyond the action. i can't think of any other movie that is questionable as a work of art, that is so emotionally rich that it stays with you this way. like certain great muckraking novels, it is informed with a moral indignation that raises it to a plane above its genre. it was not conceived in the patterns of romance or melodrama; it is one of those rare works that seems to emerge from the welter of human experience without smoothing away the rough edges, or losing the sense of confusion and accident in human affairs. the movie was directed by Trey Edward Shults, best known for the violence and shock of "It Comes at Night. here, he seems to bewitch audiences even when he bewilders them. because he doesnt go in with naïve and limiting concepts, what he finds ties in with ones own experience. he introduces unusual touches, weaves unexpected motifs, and transforms routine material into a much more personal expression. identity, communication, conflicts, ambiguities, confessions, alienation: those are not so much the director's subjects as they are his spectacles. every character counts for something, and every incident advances toward a common truth. the opening scenes express the personal values of a high school senior named Tyler (Kelvin Harrison Jr. centered with popularity and a showman on the wrestling team. outside of school, he parties with his classmates and spends time with his girlfriend, Alexis (Alexa Demie) but is routinely pushed to be better by his domineering father, Ronald (Sterling K. Brown. his stepmother, Catherine (Renée Elise Goldsberry) is more understanding of Tyler's pressure, and tries her best to connect with him. unbeknownst to anyone at school or home, Tyler suffers from a Level 5 SLAP tear, which he keeps secret from his family and team by stealing Ronalds painkillers. Tyler's doctor highly recommends undergoing surgery before it's too late, but, unwilling to postpone the remainder of his season, Tyler continues to wrestle competitively until he is thrown onto his shoulder during a match, causing irreparable damage and ending his season, as well as his career. one night, Tyler gets a text from Alexis indicating that she is pregnant. Alexis contemplates bringing the child to term. Tyler objects to becoming parents at their age, but Alexis is angered by his insensitivity to her own feelings. after that moment, Tyler begins a very harrowing, dark, sad and intense downward spiral. Shults handles this section by making the movie so perceptive and wounding that there's no place for Tyler to hide, no cop out he can exercise. the details are observed unblinkingly in a scene that utilizes a heart-pounding score to chronicle Tyler's meltdown. it's a visceral experience. this is precisely how tragedies occur, particularly involving teenagers and domestic violence, and Shults is completely on the mark, showing how such sad events basically go down. the film is really two love stories separated by a tragic line. whereas the first half belongs to Tyler, the second half is owned by his sister Emily (Taylor Russell. dealing with a situation and emotions that should be beyond her maturity level, Emily proves how strong she is, and how the heart can always respond to compassion and caring. she meets one of Tyler's ex-teammates Luke (Lucas Hedges. Luke is socially clumsy and 180 degrees from being a smooth-talker, but he's smitten with Emily and offers her a lovely, if unlikely, companionship. first love is almost always awkward, and watching these two navigate is quite charming and heart-warming. a road trip leads to bonding and a better understanding of each other. this is a film that really tests the edges of the cinema. and somehow, Shults' passion for the medium becomes the great excitement of the piece itself. in the first half, the aspect ratio condenses, shrinking smaller and smaller until finally Tyler and his family are reduced within a square. it is only when the story passes from Tyler to Emily midway through that the aspect ratio grows with each sequence until Emily and her family are framed within a full-screen aspect ratio again. what's interesting is when we meet Tyler, singing with his girlfriend as he drives, the aspect ratio is full-screen before it begins to slim down. once Emily and her boyfriend sing together as she drives, the aspect ratio spreads back to full screen, bringing the story full-circle. a 360 degree spin shot is even used within both scenes. Shults undermines a key principle in fiction: the notion that people are in control of themselves. these characters are moved by forces they don't even understand. their curse is not fate in the Greek sense: it's not an external force, it dwells within their own psyche. he offers both the American family in suburbia and the psychotic undercurrents, the conventions and the contradictions, that can stifle anyone's soul. the film has no extra gestures. it regards with a level, interested gaze. it remains a living movie that retains the power to surprise and involve us, an epic on violence and action, a raging, sensuous work of such overpowering immediacy that it leaves you both exhilarated and exhausted. we see as it sees, and as the characters live, without rehearsal, the first time through. life, as "Waves" demonstrates, is too complex for facile endings. next up was A Hidden Life a film like Terrence Malick's "A Hidden Life" doesn't offer the sensual excitement that movies usually do, but you don't go to it for that; you go to it for Malick's crude, prosaic virtuosity, which is also pure American poetry. he has full control of the material, and though the film, set in the chaotic last stages of war, is a narrative of complex incidents, the outer chaos is also controlled. it is a traumatic, contemplative, visually stunning journey into the heart of man. the movie has a basic honesty, and recreates these historical events in a way that's truthful. the details register upon us with an intensity and a consistency beyond realism. the film takes place in Austria, 1939. peasant farmer Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl) born and bred in the small village of St. Radegund, is working his land when war breaks out. with his wife Franziska (Valerie Pachner) they are important members of the tight-knit rural community. they live a simple life with the passing years marked by the arrival of the couple's three girls. Franz is called up to basic training and is away from his beloved wife and children for months. eventually, when France surrenders and it seems the war might end soon, he is sent back from training. they farm the land and raise their children amid the mountains and upper valleys. many scenes depict cutting and gathering hay, as well as the broad Inn River. there has been no threat to their happiness. how could the war touch their kingdom, or disturb their peace, when they are so insignificant in the scheme of things, so far from Vienna and Berlin? as the war goes on, Franz and the other able-bodied men in the village are called up to fight. their first requirement is to swear an oath of allegiance to Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. despite pressure from the Mayor and from the Bishop of Salzburg, Franz refuses, causing his farm neighbors to increasingly ostracize him and his family. wrestling with the knowledge that his decision will mean arrest and even death, he finds strength in Fani's love and support. despite many opportunities to sign the oath of allegiance, and the promise of non-combatant work, Franz continues to stand up for his beliefs. he trembles inwardly. what does his honor require of him? he alone must decide. it seems that no one give him any advice in these circumstances, even his own bishop. all that was familiar to him now seems far away. never has he felt so alone - he who has always been so close to his family, his neighbors. the movie is built out of a series of emotionally charged images that express inner stress, and Malick handles them with the fluidity of a master, still in the favor of a wandering wide-angle camera that constantly circles around subjects as they wander through the film. superbly photographed by Jörg Widmer in a style suggesting Edvard Munch, the movie is smooth and hypnotic; it has oracular power and the pull of a dream. it lives up to our expectations, especially in capturing the vitality and spirit of nature through lush landscapes, mountains, trees, grasses, gardens, streams, rivers, and waterfalls. the family is one with nature, which stands in stark contrast to Franz when he's trapped inside the cold prison walls. composer James Newton Howard brilliantly uses a lone violin, as well as a mixture of classical music, keeping along with the sadness and nostalgia of the movies main theme. most of the intensity comes from the actors. the film is filled with vivid supporting roles. while on maneuvers, Franz meets a fellow soldier a few years younger than himself. his name is Waldlan (Franz Rogowski. there is no pretense about this man. he is kind, generous, honest, and endlessly optimistic. he lives in the moment, forgetful of the past, with no thought to the future. Waldlans face wears the innocent expression of a child, and like a child everything he says or does is spontaneous and genuine. the main actors, August Diehl and Valerie Pachner, are nearly overwhelming in their emotional strategy. oddly, the film does not inspire a lot of complex interpretations. perhaps that's because the emotions it portrays and evokes speak for themselves. it would be hard to say that any of the characters, or any of their actions, stand for anything except the inexplicable way that life can bless and punish us. the one downside, at least on a first viewing, is that it runs too long, and there needed to be an editor or two with more gumption to say that just five or ten minutes could be lost. still, it is a marvelous production in its daring and breadth. the two-hour limit on most films makes them essentially short stories, but "A Hidden Life" is a novel. it is a luxury to be enveloped in a good film, and to know there's a lot more of it, that it is not moving inexorably toward an ending you can anticipate, but moving indefinitely into a future that is free to be shaped in surprising ways. "A Hidden Life" is full of aesthetic contradictions, and seeing it with an audience that enjoys them adds to the picture's freshness. when you watch a Malick film, you're seeing a film made by a man who mastered a twenty-first century art while remaining a romantic dandy of the past. Malick is still ahead of most film artists, yet he has always been behind movie audiences. he's sort of like a double anachronism, a living time warp.
I just watched it and I have to say that this movie is one of a kind. First movie in a long time that had me actually a little afraid to go to bed. Spiral Farm Watch stream.nbcolympics. I know that this whole mess is going to seem rather overwhelming to some people, so i'm just going to toss out some suggestions about how to step back. Lurlur especially seems overwhelmed. i'm not tagging her here but i think if anyone is feeling a little too heated, these might be some okay suggestions. i think it's safe to say that a lot of people have gotten hurt in the fray. it's been entirely worth it, getting these issues out there so they can be discussed, but let's all look out for each other so we don't get hurt. it's a good time for EVERYONE to do a little check-in and make sure you're doing ok. it's ok to take a break from reddit. i suggest getting an addon usually used for 'productivity' that will allow you to block a website for a certain amount of time. looks like a good one, for instance. if you need something that's harder to not just deinstall like a browser extension, this thread has some suggestions. consider deinstalling the reddit app. there are also apps that can block websites on your phone and other mobile devices, but it seems the best one is paid. you can also look at blocking a website for a certain amount of time on your home router. here's an overview of a few more options. do some self-care. here's a rather messy list that may be out of date i compiled some time ago, but even if some links are broken, you can look at the general categories to get some ideas: get up and stretch. are you holding tension in your neck and shoulders? or somewhere else? here's a wealth of easy to understand videos showing stretches and exercises. have you eaten lately? get something to drink, too, if you don't have one already. a cup of something warm might be comforting, if the weather's cool enough where you are; you can take a moment to focus on the warmth of holding your mug in your hands to ground yourself. maybe consider making yourself a little treat, like a mug chocolate cake. here's some paleo and gluten free options, too. now might be a good time to pull out that sheet mask you've been saving, too. don't have one? you might be able to make yourself a facial mask from stuff you've got in the kitchen. The valley is named for it's purple flowers that close when exposed by to direct sunlight. Trapped deep within one of the two mountains is a large colossus. It's sole town is known as Shademire, and one of the best places to find criminals. u/TheGreenJedi The Grove of the Multi-Millennial Shoot - Deep within a grove under the protection of a large temple, there lies the remains of the Millennial Shoot, a huge shoot of bamboo said to be at least 4, 000 years old. Those with special permission from the protectors of the grove can visit what is left, a short cross section of the ancient bamboo that's hollow and at least 100 feet wide. Supposedly, the massive shoot once was the home of a great goddess of nature. When the bamboo fell in an all-consuming fire spread by malicious humans, the goddess fled the material plane in tears for her fallen children. Those at the temple visit the remains regularly, both to pray and to do research in the hopes of recreating the sprout of the Multi-Millennial Shoot and growing another great stalk in the hope their goddess will be able and willing to return one day. u/MildlyConcernedGhost Mostod Cabnuli - An exquisitely detailed bronze statue of a dwarf, nearly 300 feet tall, turned blue-green by ages of exposure to the elements. His warhammer is raised in challenge, his expression one of boldly going forth. Humans and their ilk call it variously "The Dwarf Triumphant. The Great Dwarf. and similar names. Dwarves refuse to speak of it, only correcting the name to Mostod Cabnuli. Those proficient in Dwarvish would recognize this to mean, A Shameful Fool. There are elves who seem to know more, remarking that only a dwarf would erect such a towering monument to failure. u/NobbynobLittlun The Sidewise Cliff - an impossibly tall cliff face that is deceptively easy to climb, due to the fact that gravity is oriented towards its surface once the climber is several feet up. u/Pidgewiffler The Roof of the World - This barren plateau sits so high that looking down from its edge gives you an overhead view of some of the world's highest peaks. Even the hardiest of mountain peoples find themselves short of breath there. It is said that the gods have a palace at its center, but none who have tried to reach it have returned. u/slaaitch His Hand, Extended - A statue, ancient and beyond memory: perhaps crafted by giants, or those who came before. It would be massive and monumental, were it still visible. Age and erosion have only left the vague visage of a face that emerges from an otherwise unremarkable mountain, and a massive arm that extends out towards the setting sun. It is the greatest place in the world to watch the twilight. u/NoirGarde The Infinite Spire - A very thin piece of strange material that rises infinitely into the sky. It is simultaneously bright and dark colored, and your hand will go right through it. It is in an area of very tall energy emitting noded towers, and the spire is rumored to either be a beacon for something, a beam from a Gods hand, or something much more ancient and powerful. u/Dragonix975 The Tower of Power - An enigmatic tower the glows with an aura of power. Inscribed prominently is a glowing green glyph, recognized as the universal symbol of power. u/Alc4n4tor The Pandora - A perfectly normal luxury boat, the kind rich folk use for party's. However, it's perched at the top of a mountain so tall it enters space. u/Raspberry_Milkshake Moradin's Cube - A cunningly-engineered dwarven temple, shaped like a cube with one point sunken into the surrounding stone. It's whispered that a guardian golem is entombed in the temple's inmost chamber, ready to arise and defend the dwarven acolytes when needed. u/stygianelectro Salt Rock - A crumbling prison several miles from shore on a jagged black rock, battered by frequent hurricanes. Many of the cells have crumbled open to the jagged rocks and roiling sea below. To break out or try to break someone out would be suicide. The cells drip with salt water, a few torches in the hallway dimly illuminating the halls. A few poorly-paid guards work here despite the rough conditions, the docks on one side protected against much of the wind and powerful waves. A high arched bridge connects the two halves of the rock island, split down the center by the ocean. On one side, the guards and quarters. On the other, the prison. This is mostly a place for people the world wants to forget about. u/Canid_Red Marble Mountain - A stout white marble mountain, the grain of the stone more vertical than diagonal. Towards the tops of the mass, rain has stained the stone a dark shade, the top covered in dense foliage. Vines and foliage dangle into a crevasse inside the mountain, the bottom filled with pale blue water, lit by sunlight from cracks in the mountain above. Perhaps you can take a boat to a temple in the center, maybe a statue of a deity is carved out of one face of the mountain, maybe many deities on many faces, or perhaps this is the site of a bustling marble mine? Maybe a white palace or fortress is built into the mountain. u/Canid_Red Sulfuric Volcano - A massive dome-shaped volcano sits quietly smoldering, the caldera full of blue lava, ringed by brilliant yellow sulfur. Plumes of yellow smoke dissipate into the atmosphere above from vents in the surface. The air is acrid and stings the eyes and throat. The area around the volcano has many sulfuric hot springs that are a comfortable temperature and are used for relaxation. Perhaps this is the site of a sulfur mine? u/Canid_Red The Red Columns - At the edge of a canyonscape, a cluster of earth-red pillars of stone jut out from the sand that's blown up against the base. Maybe there are old Petra-style buildings carved into the bases of them, or just old, nearly invisible glyphs carved into the surface? u/Canid_Red The Garden of Ash - A few jagged dormant volcanoes sit silently, one of them still glowing orange with heat from within, a stark contrast to the dim bluish light cast by the frequent cloud cover. Once-massive petrified trees stand defiant of time and erosion, some of them toppled sideways. The ground is covered in a rich black dirt, but verdant green moss seems to be one of the only vegetation. Fog is common in the lower-lying areas of the terrain. Maybe you see shadowy things moving in your peripheral vision, maybe an ancient demon meditates among the pillar-like trees, or maybe the ruins of an ancient city lie quiet and mossed-over, waiting to be explored. u/Canid_Red The White Desert - A desert with brilliant white sand, the recesses between some of the lower-lying dunes where water settles during the rare storms toned a cold gray. White mountains jut out from the horizon. Most of the animal life has evolved to be very pale or even white. u/Canid_Red The Blood Flats - A salt flat covered with a thin layer of water. A red bacteria thrives on the salt, resulting in "pools" of red bacteria between a sort of webbing of salt across the surface near the colonies' edge. The only sound is the wind and your footsteps in the shallow, cool water. Perhaps some kind of structure sits at the absolute center? A fortress, taking advantage of the openness? A derelict temple encrusted in red lichen and salt, holding a well to an ancient secret? A hole in reality? u/Canid_Red The Blue Holes - A region of limestone by the ocean, filled with a spongelike network of caves that breach the surface, the ocean waves reduced but not stopped entirely by the columns of limestone supporting the surface. Plants grow on top, and some of the holes near the edge of the network have small beaches from years of erosion. Does anything live here? Are there ships, lawless towns built into the undercaverns, wanted people trying to hide, or maybe an ancient amphibious beast hiding in a labyrinth of tunnels? Thankfully, the place is protected from the waves, which would have eroded the thing by now. Nobody knows when it will inevitable collapse into the sea though, which would cause a big, destructive wave, so nobody lives in the region, and people are advised to stay away. u/Gabrielckc The Buried City - A massive ancient city, entirely buried in rock and dirt. There are some caves and man-made tunnels connecting the known houses, that contain numerous archaeological treasures. Nobody knows who lived here, but excavations were discontinued due to the unpredictable floods that cover the entire underground complex, and have drowned various expeditions. u/Gabrielckc The Oceanic Towers - Strange, monolithic constructions dotted throughout the ocean. They loom hundreds of feet over sea level and most of them seem sealed. Some efforts made to enter these structures or subvert their security have revealed intensely dangerous magical wards at work. u/Flutterwander Poor Pirate's Falls - A waterfall popular with tourists on the coast, a pirate once famously tried to store his treasure trove up in an impossibly difficult to reach and protected cave. This worked out well until one spring the rains came and washed the hidden horde one coin at a time over the falls. Rumors of a waterfall that rained free money exploded and while any loose treasure has already long since been collected, the occasional gem still gets washed loose each spring. u/CeylonSenna Devilsong Meadow - A flowering meadow where aberrations are spawned, the meadow is filled with alien life and mutated plants. An ancient honeycombed crashed meteor sits in the center of the meadow. When the wind blows through the hollows, eldritch creatures slip into our reality. u/CeylonSenna Gorrister's Folly - A beautiful chasm hidden in a lush tropical jungle and full of jagged magical crystals on either side of walls draped with uniformed skeletons. This is because it was discovered by a General Gorrister who famously defeated himself by marching his army into the overgrown chasm. u/CeylonSenna The Orb of Anthok - This 6ft wide pearl is said to be the most beautiful object in all of creation. Looking directly upon it can cause permanent blindness. As such, it is highly guarded and restricted. In reality, there is no pearl. There is a highly profitable Tourist Center nearby though. u/koverasalt Rasill Hill - This hill is famous among locals, but nobody can quite remember why. When looking at the hill, it seems fairly mundane. u/koverasalt Grokag's Folly - This natural stone bridge is rumored to be a Stone Giant's corpse. The stone giant fell into the ravine, got stuck, and turned to stone over time. If you listen closely, you can still hear the stone giant lamenting his poor footing. u/koverasalt The Town of Vivid - In this hot and dry town, all the structures in the town are tiled in shades of Purple, Cobalt Blue and Magenta. and can be shiny or matte. The clay in the area results in those colors when fired. Some times a house is all one color, sometimes a wall is a mosaic of those colors. Structures that use tiles of different colors, will be vandalized until they conform. The cobbles stones and pavers in the roads and sidewalks are dark glittery basalt. At the four corners of every street crossing, there is a carved gargoyle on each building room corner. u/PenAndInkAndComics Kaskarand's Well - In a far off land, in a very rocky place with little vegetation, instead of building up, they built down, there is a immense cone shaped hole in the mesa. Carved into the sides is a spiral path with arches looking out in the space of the cone and doors and passages going into the rock. A hundred floors deep. The spiral gets tighter and tighter until it reaches the bottom where there is pool of water. The land surrounding the cone is checkered with crops and tiled rain catchers that funnel water to the cone and down into the pool at the bottom of the cone for use by the inhabitants. The outside surfaces of the cone are mirrored shiny colored tiles to help bounce light down the cone and to help it from looking bleak and dark. Lots of vines and shade loving foliage. Some reference: Somewhat this but bigger and grander, shaped in a cone and less bleak. Its uneven excavation lends itself to the idea that it was not merely an ancient mining operation, but instead the site of the Ruined City of Lexico'Tutoum with this shell of a crater the only clue that it ever existed, or so they say. Said to have been a metropolis, the first in fact, of modern humanoid-kind. However, what puzzles many is the fact that within the quarry itself there are not skeletons of a single race, but many. Lizardfolk bones are found in number, as well as Human, and Elf, and Orc. Aarokocra, Tabaxi, Goliath, Dwarf are found too, among others. And even a very few skeletons of Gith were confirmed. They say it was a gathering place. A place of trade, and of politics, and of interaction. But what often missed is that this was a place of progress. What people often forget is that the minds of prehistory were not fools, but geniuses in their own right. If its to be believed, then this site was likely the greatest contributor to the concept civilization ever established. Perhaps the last bastion of a race, should their worldly ventures ever lead to disaster. From its supposed stone and jeweled peaks, to its riverways running throughout, this place was a haven for the fledgling races of the world. u/yiorgiom The Valley of Mists - A mysterious jungle utopia lies between a dangerous mountain range, or so they say. Like in a fairytale, they say massive islands of floating stone listlessly sway, as if raised by some godly force of nature. The jungles themselves house giant reptilian creatures: some say dinosaurs, others say dragons. Others revoke that, stating that the last of The Colossi, children and direct descendants of the Gods, take refuge here in their dying days. However, what is agreed upon is the source of the watery vapour that quenches this place: a waterfall that falls from the clouds, with no apparent beginning. Only old Sages know the truth of it, and even fewer still have seen it with their own eyes. u/yiorgiom The Anvil - This strange artifact was unearthed in a rocky badland. The surrounding environment is filled with boulders and crushed rocks and caves and spires. Its as if this used to be an old mountain range that has since been ground into "rubble. The anvil itself is about 10 feet high and covers in nicks and bumps from heavy use. It weighs many many tons, and sticks up out of the ground at an angle, for it could not be moved or readjusted (For viewing or moving purposes) due to its weight. u/yiorgiom The Dark Dive - This massive crevasse is like a black scar on the planet. Even as you let your feet hang over the side, the concept of light seems to afraid to venture past its horizontal plane. Its not fluid, or corporeal, like some gas of darkness. Its not something you can feel. It just is darkness. Overwhelming. Suffocating. They say it leads to realms of death, the abyss, and even the vastness of void space itself, but no one really knows. It begins, right here where you stand, but where does it end? u/yiorgiom The Stone of Lords - This large grey rock is strange in that it appears to be carved by man but is in fact naturally formed, or so they say. A near perfect 100 metres on each side forms this cubic structure. The stone itself seems to be devoid of any discernible impurities, however it does exude a very powerful antimagic field, but its form has been deemed un-minable/un-refinable. Maybe it really is merely a miracle of nature, or maybe the living essence of the planet was trying to tell us something by its formation. u/yiorgiom Haldir's Forest, a. k. a. "The Deep Green Sea. You wouldn't notice it from the outside where the tree tops blend in perfectly with the surrounding areas, but once you enter it, you begin the notice a deep and steady downward slope through the trees. The forest and the trees grow thicker the deeper you go and before long you notice that there are only patches of sunlight that penetrate through the canopy. The forest floor sinks down below the ocean level while some trees grow taller than some of the smaller mountains. Pack your bags if you plan to march through it though. It can be easy to lose track of where you are and where to go. u/WitchDearbhail Gaea's Laceration - A massive ravine, almost 5 miles across in size. It was thought to have been formed by a cult gathering far underground that attempted to open a portal to Pandemonium. The gate collapsed upon itself and sent a gargantuan shockwave through the earth, blasting the ground into the sky for miles around. A few optional quirks you could add would be that occasional blasts of Pandemonium wind would come flying from the ravine, as a result of the lingering unstable magic. Also, you could have chunks of earth stuck into the ground at odd angles surrounding the ravine, as a result of the initial blast that created the hole. u/GigaTech5 Zephyr's Candy Factory - The namesake Gnome has long since died, but the demand is as strong as ever, even through two generations of mis-management and a hostile takeover by a competitor. Zephyr's candy is so good, the recipe is reputedly held under magical lock and key. The factory itself is run down, but is constantly humming with low wage laborers working most hours of the day. They are so busy that no one seems to have noticed the squatter's camp deep under the factory floor, an abandoned storage area with labyrinthian tunnels, seemingly forgotten about in the recent acquisition. u/GoldenGlobe The Corner Stone - This massive monolith glows with draconic runes but seems to predate even the dragons. The towering marbled white stone marks the corner of something, but no one seems to know what. An invisible wall of force extends underground and far into the heavens on two perpendicular sides of the stone. Travel west or south is impossible from this point. Strange that no one has found any of the other corner stones, or managed to find the end of the force fields. No one really sticks around for long, the place fills most visitors with a deep feeling of dread or fear. u/GoldenGlobe Crystal Ravine - Underwater ravine that is located in the deepest darkest part of the ocean, however once you go deeper, magical crystals begin to grow from the walls of the ravine that illuminate the space. It is impossible to tell how deep into the stone these crystals go, but they get bigger the deeper you go. No one knows the purpose of these crystals but some say an ancient civilization used them as a power source and had a creature guarding them. u/heviartem The Exploding Forest - The trees in this forest resemble pine trees. Complete with beds of dry pine needles on the forest floor and low laying ferns. The pinecones of the trees are known to erupt with violent force when they strike the ground. Several humanoid tribes have been known to harvest these pine cones and throw them at human and elven settlements during their late autumn raids. u/PutridMeatPuppet The Edge - A village on the edge of a forest they believe is infinitely deep. Their elderly pack provisions and go venturing into it as a death rite. u/futureButt The Fountain Volcano - This massive volcano sitting in the ocean is mainly know for one thing, that being a neverending stream of water that spews out from the Caldera of the volcano like a fountain, hence the name. Because of this it's been deemed almost impossible to climb this volcano because of the constant stream of water covering almost the entire volcano with a waterfalls. Many have tried to figure out the mechanism behind this phenomenon and though there haven't been any definitive answers it's been theorized that it's the result of man experimenting with magic since there is a local legend of a prosperous island civilization surrounding a huge mountain. Orginally they where watched over by the spirit of the island, but in their hubris the inhabitants tried to control the spirit for their own gain. To punish the islanders for their treachery the spirit punished them by drowning their land making it one with the water that surrounded them. u/apple_of_doom The Clocktower - a tower where dwells the presence of the Time God himself. It is a spiraling library, the base begining at the dawn of time, where each book convincingly replays an event in history when opened. Up the tower are more recent events, and at the very top is the World Clock which is said to be able to alter the time setting of the world. u/E3RIE_ The Mirrored Abyss - A deep narrow stretch of ocean that due to a quirk of the tides and weather every night without a moon in the sky the water becomes eerily still and night sky is perfectly reflected. The water stays like this until dawn just as the sun appears at the horizon. u/thegoldsmith67 The Melting Pot - Inside an ancient dwarven fortress, is a 3 story tall pot of stew that has been cooking since before the dwarves claimed the cooking pot. Originally built by hill giants, the ownership of the stew has been claimed through conquest by goblins, elves, and most recently (and longest lasting) Dwarves. The dwarven fortress has water pumping systems and diverse underground farming to support the immense demand of the stew. As the stew has been cooking for thousands upon thousands of years, the stew is so flavorful and rich that many travel across continents to be a part of something larger than themselves. In addition taking care of the cooking demands, the dwarves of the fortress require visitors place all available rations into the pot as tribute upon entering the civilization. The dwarves have also taken to carving the immense history (still being investigated by dwarven scholars) into the sides of the pot. u/greatGoD67 The Teetle Tavern - Deep in the jungle of a civilized island, there is a large warship which was discovered at the top of a great tree. The inside of the ship has entirely been converted into a tavern, with the ship listing precariously with every touch of the breeze. u/greatGoD67 The Fish out of Water - The skeleton of a Leviathan is found in a great desert, its ancient bones being too difficult to remove. To most it is merely a spectacle for those willing to venture away from the safer desert trade routes. u/greatGoD67 The Gnomish Tinker Box - A solid mechanical city contained within a citysized cube in a field. Every single road, building, shopkeeper, and tree is simply a painted clockwork invention. The real flesh and blood Gnome creators are rarely seen. u/greatGoD67 The Floating Forest - No one knows why they float, or how, just that they do. Long ago the forest let go of the earth and made its new home amongst the clouds. Clans of druids care for and tend the forest, weaving the flexible roots into bridges and homes. Multiple generations of druids have lived in the massive forest, never once touching the ground. Rarely, roots are lowered in order to trade with the undergrowth. u/DisguiseSelf Canine Cemetery - A large graveyard which is overlooked by a statue dedicated to Yowler, the God of all Dogs. As its name might suggest, the dearly departed buried here consist solely of the canine persuasion. It is generally believed that every full moon, the spirits of those who inhabit their place rise from their graves to frolic and play fetch with whoever happens to be nearby. u/Sobek6 The Farm - A long time ago, a retired yet lonely wizard decided to hang up his cloak and settle down as a farmer. As he grew older and seeing his animals as his only friends he cast one last spell and gave them the most special gift of all. The gift of sentience. The wizard is long since gone, having been buried in a nearby hill by his animal friends but the farm is still in operation run solely by the descendants of those first animals who were given the gift of reason. u/Sobek6 The Isle of Misfit Toys - This strange northern island's inhabitants are entirely discarded and dysfunctional toys from children across the planes. The magic of the island brings the toys to life for unknown reasons, but it is rumored that the island was the dumping ground of an ancient civilization or the nefarious whim of a powerful hag. Some of the toys have banded together for protection and formed local governments but war is threatening to break out between the Unwanted and the Defective factions. u/DinoTuesday Cadaver Hill - Site of an ancient battle, the bodies of which do not decay. At the top of the hill sits a colourful entertainer's wagon. Flickering light occasionally shines forth between the shutters and strange music can be heard on the wind. The locals tend to stay far away and rumours abound of the bodies coming to life and shambling after intruders. u/mpdburton Temple of Flight - A giant white marble 500ft cube temple floating over a lake 1000ft in the air. The temple is located high in the mountains over lake. The temple is dedicated to the Temple of Flight, inside the temple is a portal to the Air Plane. There are silent monks who guard the mountains/lake and will not allow outsiders to enter. u/mikes3ds Crater of Xörulstrund - A massive crater with a one mile radius that goes 2 miles deep. In the center is a stone statue of a vaguely humanoid feature, except the face is an abstract group of shapes floating on their own. Rumour has it that it's an ancient immortal evil from a millenia ago. No one has had the courage/recklessness to un-petrify it. u/Sloadkroger The ThawField Wilds - A wide plain that is periodically swept with blizzards covering the land in snow from the south but due to warm ocean currents the snow melts extremely quickly when the wind changes to the north travelers can watch the snows cover the land as far as the eye can see and watch it melt and be green again in under an hour. Most plants cannot survive here so the plains are covered in a thick layer of verdant springy moss covering rock, ruins and caves who knows what lies below this stark and beautiful landscape. u/thegoldsmith67 The Pebble in The Pond - This single point in the centre of the ocean, a mysterious platform made of Stone, none knows where this “pebble” came from but it remains unchanging there, the sight of the sun rising from this pebble is said to bring courage to the cowardly and the sun setting from this pebble is said to bring peace to this with a storm within, sailors seek refuge on this “pebble” from storms since strangely no storm dares to spill water on this stone of unknown origin, basking in the light of the full moon on this stone is said to cure many illnesses. u/Last-of-the-Akbars Kalaturango Dam - 500 years ago, a family of beavers built a small dam to create a lake at the foot of the Kalaturango Waterfall. As the family of beavers grew, they expanded the dam around the sides of the lake. When they ran out of room, the dam began extending upwards, carrying the water level with it. After five centuries, the dam has nearly reached the top of the waterfall and continues to grow, housing hundreds of beavers. Flowers, bushes, and the occasional tree pop out from the dams sides, their seeds having found purchase in the clumps of dirt holding the ancient wood together. u/Pretzelbomber Arhak Yotunn - On a secluded island, lies a massive stronghold. In ancient times, when the giants ruled, they would use this island as a prison for other giants. 20' tall gallows, hanging with nooses that an ordinary man could use as a swing. Gravestones of each giant executed there, towering 15 feet tall, carved in the language of giants. The rusted bars of the cells are easy to slip through for anything medium sized. Some old inhabitants may still live here, huge rats, spiders, and other pests that for a giant would seem like minor inconveniences. In the absence of the giants, the whole prison has built up quite a pest problem. u/bladeraptor3 The Ring - Surrounded by thick vegetation, there is a perfect circle, 100 m in diameter, where no plants grow. In the center of the ring, a stone hand sticks up from the dirt, grasping at the sky. Locals believe the place to be cursed and haunted. Some legends tell of an epic battle waged there. u/arguablyhuman The Flower Bowls - It's a site where two powerful sorcerers once dueled each other to establish reign over a long forgotten kingdom. During the battle the landscape became pocked with craters huge and small. All that was alive either fled or died. As the battle dragged on, it became clear they were equally matched. Admiration grew and slowly the duel turned into a dance. Their attacks became flirtations until finally they allowed each other to heal their battle worn bodies and they made the earth tremble in an entirely different way. Some say a minor love goddess was conceived in one of those craters. Nowadays the inside of the craters are overgrown with beautiful, sweet smelling flowers, that bloom all year round. On rare occasions a flower develops into a seed, which is said to be a powerful aphrodisiac. u/FreakyFridayDVD Mile-End District - A large black market in a popular city that is known as the one-stop shop for illegal buying and trading. You need an encrypted phrase to enter that changes every week. The location of said market also changes to avoid attention from officials. From various buildings, on the outskirts of the city, or an abandoned underground sewer - the locations are unpredictable to the untrained eye. It's best to keep a low profile when visiting, especially if you look out of the ordinary. u/ItsGrapecakeYo The Great Bridge - This massive structure seems to constantly be under repair or construction, but it features a double archway and is roofed by aqueducts. The bridge connects the twin cities and is wide enough for merchants and shop keepers to open stalls on its streets. u/RitchieRitch62 The Passagian Bazaar - The largest market in the world, merchants make most of their profits for the year in a few weeks here. Bustling with exports from all across the world, it is also a great attractor or performers of all kinds. u/RitchieRitch62 The Walls of Greymar - The city of Greymar is carved from the mountain itself, and is situated behind massive walls of granite, reinforced by columns of iron. Half the city lies under open skies between walls and mountain side, the other underground. u/ The Denerian Athenium - An ancient library protected by old elven magic, it was long abandoned by a wood elven kingdom before being rediscovered by human explorers. It is packed with history and lost knowledge. u/RitchieRitch62 The Blue Abyss - Located in the center of the Blue Atoll, sailors fear what lies in its depths. From the banks of the atoll one can see the dark deep blue depths of the underwater pig framed by the pleasant reefs of the atoll. The city was long ago a great hill dwarf civilization that was abandoned. Its 7 boroughs each occupy a different island, and when tsunamis or war threatens the islands, they can rise into the sky. Gondolas and zip lines run from island to island. u/RitchieRitch62 The Pit of (insert city. In ancient times the city was underwater and occupied by Triton and mer folk. Their old cavern remains, a strange after effect and transition of architecture. Its many levels spiral downward from the city surface, waterfalls pour from level to level via waterways. u/RitchieRitch62 The Dreadhold - A towering and ancient prison atop an island mountain, only accessible at high tide or via flying mount. The guards of the dreadhold tamed the Wyvern indigenous to the steep slopes of the mountain long ago. u/RitchieRitch62 The Stellaris Theatre - A beautiful marble theatre with open skies, often closed via massive silk sails. Combat Changes As discussed previously, damage numbers in Destiny 2 have been a bit out of control. Were making some adjustments so the numbers shown are smaller and easier to comprehend without affecting the percentage of damage youre dealing. Were also adjusting how your Power works when you go up against enemies tougher than you. Here are some more details on what to expect. PvE Damage Numbers Display Goal: To provide players with useful and legible feedback for damage dealt to enemy combatants across many years of Power progression. Displayed damage numbers for damage dealt to non-Guardian enemy combatants are crunched Damage dealt is displayed using fewer digits to enhance readability of damage output Occurrences of displayed damage getting capped at 999, 999 should be significantly reduced or eliminated The exponential curve used to calculate damage numbers for display is replaced with a new linear curve that is built to last for many years As players grow in Power, displayed damage numbers increase at a much more measured pace than previously This is a UI update only; player damage output, whether measured as hits to kill, time to kill, or DPS, remains unchanged by this update PvE Difficulty Tuning Goals: Widen the sweet spot where fighting higher-level combatants provides a fun, challenging, and rewarding combat experience for a more enjoyable Power climb. They will no longer have special perks and will instead be curated rolls. A previous article incorrectly showed two new pinnacle weapons. The good news is you will be getting three ritual weapons for each of the ritual activities: Crucible, Vanguard, and Gambit. Heres the Destiny Dev Team on why we made this difficult decision and some information on upcoming perk changes. Destiny Dev Team: The decision to stop creating extremely powerful pinnacle weapons was made for a variety of reasons. The first was that the band in which “pinnacle” perk can exist is actually quite small, and most of them far exceeded the efficacy they should have been at. Another issue is that they cause problems in the player ecosystem, particularly in the case of the Crucible pinnacle weapons. Due to the nature of PvP and PvE, anything that works well in PvP is likely going be extremely effective in PvE as well. This forces players into the Crucible if they want the “best” loadouts. Even the title of “pinnacle” set a variety of unrealistic expectations. Rather than being the absolute height of Legendary power, they were supposed to be interesting novelties to chase. These problems became more pronounced the more of them we produced. In the end, we decided to move away from pinnacle weapons. If you managed to collect them all, we hope you enjoy them! While were on the subject of weapons, here are a few important notes on changes to how perks will work. Reduced the effectiveness of the following perks in PvE: Rampage, Kill Clip, Swashbuckler, Multikill Clip, Desperado, Surrounded, Master of Arms, Onslaught In general, these perks use the same damage multipliers for PvE that they did in PvP The change to Rampage does not affect the Huckleberry Onslaught and Desperado now change bullet impact values while active in PvE Surrounded no longer multiplies precision damage on top of base damage, as it was benefiting some weapon types more than others as a result Legendary weapons have become too powerful overall. In many cases, they even outclass Exotic Primary weapons, so were walking them all back a bit. All the way back in original Destiny, we had a perk named Crowd Control, which was Rampages predecessor. Crowd Control capped out at a bonus of +15% extra damage. At this point in Destiny 2, Rampage caps out at about +67. Thats a 447% increase from the original iteration. Legendary damage perks have become so powerful, they simply invalidate non-damage related perks. Heres a quick preview of the three ritual weapons you can earn in Season of the Undying. Because these weapons are no longer pinnacle weapons, the quest required to earn them is not as in depth as previous seasons. You may know me from things like the Shattered Throne Ride Along, or this wonderful fan video made during our St. Judes charity stream. This is my first TWAB post and Im a little nervous, so Im going to use one of my favorite TV shows, Golden Girls, as a crutch. Picture it. Tempe, Arizona 2009. A sophomore in college. At this point in my life, Id never really had a girlfriend or really found myself attracted to a woman. I refused to believe I was gay. Having seen so many coming-out stories go poorly, with family and friends abandoning people they loved, I didnt want that for myself. So I ignored it by playing video games. Dragon Age: Origins had just released, and my twin brother had been bugging me for a good week to buy it and play it. Quickly I found myself wrapped in magic and steel for an untold, but probably perfectly healthy, amount of time. During this time, I found myself conversing with one of the male party members, simply trying to raise his approval. Thats when it appeared. The option to flirt with this character. I was as the kids say, “ shooketh. ” I sat for what must have been twenty minutes before deciding to click on it. He flirted back. My heart skipped. I was a ball of nerves and anxiety as the conversation continued with another chance to confess romantic feelings to the character. I thought I was going to vomit all over a simple choice in a video game. I debated with myself, what did it mean that I wanted to flirt with this character? Why did I suddenly feel like my entire existence would be changed with this one conversation? I clicked it. And thats when I learned about rejection. From a digital character. He wasnt gay, and my heart sunk. But his next words were something I didnt know I needed. “Theres nothing wrong with who you love. You are my friend no matter what. ” I spent the next two hours on the floor crying, finally feeling that it was okay to be gay. I felt more comfortable than Id ever felt in my life. I vowed, if I ever got the opportunity to pay it forward, I would. Well Im helping to pay it forward. Ive spent a lot of my time at Bungie helping to make sure Destiny is a welcoming place. Majority of the film I really enjoyed. But then it just became really stupid. It made no sense whatsoever. This was a film that was on my radar from early in the year. I knew that it was doing well at film festivals so it was one that I was waiting to get released. I lucked out when I saw that at the Nightmares Film Festival it was showing for its regional premiere. It was one that I knew I was going to see for sure. The synopsis is a soon-to-be stepmom is snowed in with her fiancé's two children at a remote holiday cabin. Just as relations begin to thaw between the trio, some strange and frightening events takes place.
What the kids did to that poor woman was shocking! Basically it's a film where two kids push a woman into a psychotic break. That's not scary, it's annoying. I was happy with the very end. I cared more about the woman than the children. Which I really don't think was intended. And if it was, why.

Michael Peña stars Mr. Roarke, who invites guests to his exclusive island resort to fulfill their fantasies - they can only choose one. But they may never come home from this vacation when their fantasies start to turn into nightmares. The main cast includes Lucy Hale, Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday, Jimmy O. Yang, Ryan Hansen, Kim Coates, and Michael Rooker. The first trailer was pretty solid, this one is just a bit better, but I'm still not sure if this going to be any good in the end. It still seems a bit too campy and obvious, but perhaps there's some good twists. Check this out. Sundance 2020: Justin Simien's Haunted Hair Horror Film 'Bad Hair' Step aside zombies and ghosts, haunted hair is going to be all the rage in 2020. And I'm not talking about The Ring. The immensely talented writer / director Justin Simien is back at the Sundance Film Festival with his second feature film (following his directorial debut Dear White People premiering at the festival in 2014. His new film is called Bad Hair, a major horror moment introducing us to a new horror concept - haunted hair weaves. The film goes all out with that haunted hair concept, perhaps indulging a bit too much, but nonetheless this still feels like a landmark film in the horror genre. It definitely will not be for everyone, because not all of us have had to deal with nappy hair, but that's also exactly why this film rules. It's original and creative and clever and specific, and introduces us to Elle Lorraine as Anna and her haunted weaves. Second Trailer for Isolated Horror Film 'The Lodge' with Riley Keough "I heard something…" Neon has released the second trailer for the indie horror film The Lodge, which initially premiered at the Sundance Film Festival one year ago. This highly anticipated film is the follow-up to Goodnight Mommy, from Austrian filmmakers Severin Fiala & Veronika Franz, and is their first English-language feature. A soon-to-be stepmom is snowed in at a lodge with her fiancé's two children near a remote holiday village. Just as relations begin to thaw between the trio, strange and frightening events take place. The horror film stars Richard Armitage, Alicia Silverstone, Riley Keough, Jaeden Lieberher, and Lia McHugh. This earned some rave reviews, but others say it's a bit too similar to Hereditary. Still worth a watch if you're into unsettling horror, and it's a good winter film about kids trapped in a snowed-in lodge. Watch: 3-Min Horror Short 'Fear Wish' by Todd Spence & Zak White "In order to wish for something you need, you gotta wish for something you fear. Otherwise that first wish goes away. Yet another tense, low key horror short film from Todd Spence & Zak White. The two have been cooking up under-5-minute, low budget horror shorts for the last few years - including Where Is It and last year's Your Date is Here. Fear Wish is their latest short and it's about a desperate man trying to wish for something he needs. Starring Nathan Sutton, with Scott Whyte and Amy McRoberts. I really enjoy their shorts because they're so simple but effective, taking a jump scare and clever concept and wrapping it with some quality writing. They're not reinventing the horror-short-wheel, but they are always fun to watch.

Mara and Williams fairytale love story began in quite an unromantic setting–a work conference. William happened to sit behind Mara, and was instantly drawn to her. “I was rendered speechless by how beautiful she was, ” William says. “I thought she must be smart, too. I did everything I could to attract her attention, including knocking off my name tag (more than once) so she would pick it up and talk to me. ” According to Mara, “It wasnt very original, but it worked! I couldnt help noticing the handsome stranger, who looked like a true Southern gentleman, and I immediately felt a connection. ” The two seized every opportunity to get to know each other, especially during coffee breaks, until their relationship blossomed and they started living together in Maras Washington, D. C. condo. There, William took her up to the rooftop one night and asked her to be his wife and best friend forever. Since they met while traveling and often saw each other in different cities during the first few months of their relationship, the couple decided it would only be fitting to have a destination wedding. Although they originally thought of getting married in Thailand, they couldnt resist changing their plans once they came across the beautiful island of Santorini. Planning a destination wedding was daunting at first for Mara; but with the help of wedding planner, Maria Sila, the wedding planning process went by smoothly. Mara also enjoyed searching for local vendors to provide unique experiences for her wedding guests, and was thrilled when she came across photographer Thanasis Kaiafas. “We fell in love with his work and he more than delivered, ” she says. Prior to the wedding, the couple had planned various activities to entertain their guests, such as a cruise of the caldera, a swim in the Mediterranean Sea, exploring the caldera hot springs, and a local wine tasting. It was the perfect way for everyone to relax and enjoy their surroundings before the big day, which was met with anticipation and excitement. “We were just so excited to finally see everything come together as we had hoped it would, ” William says. “Instead, it turned out far better than I imagined and it was one of the best days of my life. ” More than anything, the bride and groom wanted their wedding to be a “thank you” to their guests for traveling so far to celebrate with them. The reception was held at a villa with scenic views of the island and the caldera, and an intimate and glamorous ambiance was created with gold touches, lilies, greenery, and candles. Greek dancers provided entertainment and at the end of the wedding, everyone was full of food and merriment. “We will always love the smell of lilies that filled the air with their sweet perfume, ” says the bride. “And the Greek people we worked with were so friendly, welcoming, and generous–we felt like the vendors were part of our celebration. ” The next day, the newlyweds and their guests lounged around for a lazy poolside brunch. “We felt gratitude for the whole event, elation that it had gone off without a hitch, and amazement that we could be so lucky to be in such a fantastic place together, ” Mara says. “So dont ever let anyone tell you that fairytales dont exist today.
