I thought I saw everything in the trailer. But I was wrong when I watched this in cinema. It was insanely suspenseful and thrilling. And the best part was the ending which give you an awful surprise.

Hinako, understandably takes it pretty bad, but to her surprise, whenever she starts singing their favorite song, Minato's spirit appears in the closest body of water - be it a stream, the ocean, or a bottle of mineral water.
The whole story is really about Hinako, Minato's friends and family, and how they slowly but finally learn to "let go.
Of course, it's magical-realism, so in the end we get to witness some crazy action as well, where we surf down a skyscraper with our protagonists.
Unfortunately, this is not the most original story, the characters are a little two dimensional, and the filmmaking could've been a little braver.
It's fine though, the film looks really nice, colorful with constantly glowing orange hues and cool blues. The action looks fantastic as well and the environments feel very "lived in" and detailed. Seeing it on a big screen really adds to the experience.
It is also paced well, has some pretty funny moments, as well as a couple of quite moving ones.
Recommended if you manage to catch it screening somewhere, but not an essential viewing.

I took my child to see "the Star" yesterday thinking it would be a nice holiday movie. I mean, a story promoted as the first Christmas and birth of Jesus should be fairly safe, right? Warning, spoiler alert: it is NOT a nice holiday movie. 95% of it was about Mary and Joseph being hunted by the king's henchman, accompanied by his vicious dogs, while the donkey tries to find/save them. Let me say that just because the dogs try to be "good" at the very end, after the henchman falls off a cliff, doesn't make it a happy ending.
Of course, I know that persecution, hatred and violence existed and was part of the history. But Hollywood, please don't sell this to unsuspecting parents as a feel good holiday film! My child said to me afterwards, I never want to see that movie again. this 4yr old is wiser than the producers.

They investigate urban legends relating to the unusually rainy weather in Tokyo; from a psychic, they hear the legend of a "weather maiden" who can control the weather. Hodaka discovers Hina has been intimidated into working at a back-alley club. He scares off the club owners by firing his gun into the air, and he and Hina escape. She takes him to an abandoned building with a shrine on its roof, where he throws the gun away. Hina astonishes Hodaka by demonstrating her ability to clear the sky by praying. Inspired by the legend of the weather maiden, Hodaka proposes that they start a business: Hina will clear the weather for events such as weddings and parties. Their business quickly becomes a success. The police search for Hodaka, who was caught on a security camera threatening the club owners. Officers arrive at the apartment where Hina lives with her younger brother Nagi and interrogate her; Hina realizes that because they have no legal guardians, with their mother having died recently, social services is going to take them into custody. Hodaka visits Suga, who has also been visited by the police. Suga fires him, explaining that the police suspect him of kidnapping Hodaka. Hodaka, Hina and Nagi try to run away, but they are halted by a storm. Sheltering in a hotel, Hina reveals that she is slowly turning into water. She explains that she is the cause of the abnormal weather, and that she is intended to be a human sacrifice; her disappearance will return the weather to normal. Hodaka promises to protect her, but the next morning, Hina has vanished and the rains have stopped. Hodaka and Nagi are arrested. Hodaka escapes with the help of Natsumi, and they evade the police until he reaches the shrine. Inside, he encounters Suga, who attempts to stop him. Hodaka finds the gun and aims it at Suga. The police surround him, but Suga, touched by Hodaka's desperation, helps him escape. On the roof, Hodaka jumps through the shrine gate and is transported into the sky, where he finds Hina. As they fall to Earth together, Hodaka begs Hina to start living for herself; upon descending to the rooftop shrine, the rains resume. Hina, Hodaka, Natsumi, and Suga are arrested by the police. Three years later, the rain has fallen without end in Tokyo, submerging much of the city. Having finished his probation, Hodaka graduates from high school and returns to Tokyo. He meets Suga, who has expanded his business. Suga encourages him to find Hina. Hadoka finds Hina praying on a street overlooking the drowned city, and the two are reunited. We dont deserve you to save us. So please just protect the ones you love and live your youth without regrets.” At the end of the day, I dont know if I agree with his message 100. because even if the children today arent responsible, we have to deal with the consequences. But I can now see that Shinkai is coming from a place of compassion.

Who watching this in 2020. I loved this movie because to me it's a beautiful metaphorical tale of what it's like to be in love.
It can start off with a simple, kind gesture-and before you know it, you're spiraling into a world of mystery. Love is something we grow up hearing about, but nothing can prepare you for its arrival. It's like a beautiful sunrise, starting off with blushing reds and warmth, slowly enveloping you until you're helplessly soaked in sunlight.
When you're in love, you find a new sun to revolve around, and as much as you can, you want to bask in its light. As you unravel as much as you can about each others' pasts, futures, and destinies, all of the unknowable and unexplained can be daunting. But along the way, you learn that you don't need the answers to everything, the present and your feelings can be enough.
The world around you seems to change and it's not something that's easy to explain. Like trying to convince someone that she's the reason the sun shines, words don't seem vibrant or intimate enough to describe the experience itself.
With time, your relationship evolves to a point where many other relationships have ended. You're asked to commit and to sacrifice. To leap into the unknown. To give up what you have for an unsure future. Logic only points away, but the heart pushes on. You offer up your fears and doubts because you trust that person to be your sunshine, even if it rains for the rest of your life.
